5. I've talked to people in FL and NC...
They seem to think the same thing. A lady I talked to Friday morning said she'd lived in Florida for 32 years and had never seen anything like this. She's had to evacuate twice already, and is now housing some friends who had to evacuate. A lady from NC suggested it was some kind of divine retribution. I think there are too many good people in Florida for me to believe that. Though I'm not religious, sometimes I have to wonder if having an evil leader is reaping us some bad karma.

11. Ask her....
... if the 2000 election was due to supernatural intervention, would God have intervened by having votes thrown out, not allowed, and ignored? Methinks if there was a supernatural intervention, it wasn't beneficent (i.e. divine). (And the subsequent 3 1/2 years have unfortunately confirmed this theory.)

7. Why would anyone be pissed off?....
Heck, we only have a few thousands in our area without power. Of course others elsewhere have more. I could give more details of how much debris is all over. No sense cleaning it up. Neighbors still have trees on their roofs, tarps over roofs, and boarded up windows.

Lots of fun.

This is not an ordinary time. It has been heartbreaking and painful. So I will laugh later.

I posted a thread about conditions and tempers and shortages of water and gas, etc.

It was turned into something ugly because someone compared us with Iraq, called us whiny just because of 5 days without power.

Right now it is not funny. Maybe later.

31. It did offend. You minimized our plight because of Iraq.
Mainly because there is nothing we can do about Iraq. It is too late. Our own party is not coming out against it. Yes, that is why it was offensive.

Now, for another reason. It is just really non-caring to post such stuff when people are suffering. I did not bomb Iraq, I protested against going there. I cry for those people.

I supported a candidate who said it was wrong, until he was no longer there to support.

Our own party is not saying one damn word about those people in Iraq, so what the hell should Floridians do about it?

Dems Unite? Not this way, my friend. I did not vote for that damn war.

You are implying that I and others here do not care about Iraqis. That is just not fair.

Let's see, God's wrath is on us because of Iraq and the 2000 election. Good grief.

I care more about the innocent Iraqis and the plight of our poor military than did the ones who sent us there and refuse to acknowledge their plight.

No, I did NOT commit the crime of Iraq. I fought every congress person and every presidential candidate who voted for it. No, I refuse to accept blame for Iraq.

I called the campaign offices of two of the candidates on the day the bombs starting falling on Iraq. I said how do you like your vote now? They said they regretted the killing, but supported the vote.

They still do. I will not accept blame.

22. Send this to our Florida Democrats. It is more their fault than anyones.
I understand the reference to elections, but that would be the Secretary of State, not division of elections. Secretary has the power.

Our little group here is working hard, but our local DEC refused to sign the petition card for our candidate who was pro-choice, intelligent, and financially aware.

Instead they made sure one got in who is anti-gay, anti-choice, anti-social programs....in other words a Republican. He stated publicly he was not sure what he was doing here. He was pushed and campaigned for by the Catholic Church.

Then the local churches told everyone who to vote for.

So our DFA group here is working hard to get progressive intelligent candidates, and we are fought by our own party.

There will be no change in Florida this time, but it will not be the fault of Republicans. Ask JCMach1. He knows. When he ran in 2002, his local DEC worked against him.

Get back to me later on God's Retribution. And save it for our Democrats here.

25. It's "divine retribution" only in this sense:
Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 07:43 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
Actions have consequences. Humans have been messing up the environment with runaway land development, building more and more roads, draining aquifers, overfishing, chopping down old growth trees, draining swamps, destroying wildlife habitat, burning unnecessary fossil fuels and so on and so on for far too long.

It's global warming, folks, and the climatologists told us that some of the earliest signs would be not only higher temperatures, but also greater extremes of temperatures and more violent and frequent storms. It isn't just the Caribbean, you know. East Asia has had an amazing *seventeen* typhoons this years, and Tokyo, steamy during most summers, is having its hottest summer/fall in decades, with temps five to ten degrees Fahrenheit above normal.

We are in trouble, and we're not even trying to stop it, because we like our cars and our trophy houses and our wars for oil and all the other destructive forces, and besides, every time there's a bit of unseasonable cool weather, some freeper writes in to the newspaper and says,"See? There's no such thing as global warming."

It started before 2000 but it came to fruition then. Talk to the party leaders who manipulate us, who refused to stand up to the Bush steamroller here in 2000. Now we get preached to here at a Democratic forum if we want our party to condemn this horrible war, speak out.

Most of the people here are real Democrats.

I am ashamed of the lack of caring over our plight here.

Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 08:22 PM by DemsUnite
Our futures are not in our leader's hands, mad. Their futures are in ours.

It is understandable to think otherwise, however. After all, we are a species who superstitiously thinks perhaps "God" is engineering catatrophes for the sake of political retribution. Even in jest, it is an interesting commentary regarding the notions of God, self and personal empowerment.

on a post in a friend's livejournal - this toon just perfectly captured what I was going to write.

But I changed my mind, for I cannot but help think that the poor people who are suffering most because of these hurricanes are the exact same people whom Katherine Harris and Jeb Bush screwed four years ago. I do not believe in a God who would do such a thing.

But I must admit that this toon captures perfectly the first thought that ran thru my mind when my friend posted about Ivan.

52. We have two neighbors who live alone with health problems.
We see to a lot of their needs. One had heart problems during the 18 hour onslaught of Frances, as the eye passed over us. We stayed on the phone with him, as he took his nitro and a tranquilizing medication. Fortunately he was ok. That is good, because for 18 hours we could have gone nowhere.

There was not emergency service such as ambulances or police or anything. If he had had a real heart attack, there was nothing we could have done.

So, do I have a sense of humor about God's retribution? You bet I don't.

Do I think it is good taste to be compared to Iraqis? You bet I don't. I did not vote for the war.

58. When I react over stuff like this, I do because of people like this.
Like our neighbors. We are able to handle things better than they are. They are both in their 80s and want to stay in their own homes. They have a deeper fear than people like my husband and I, because of their inability to get around.

I have never seen such a prolonged period where they have just been so down.

I react because of them, and because of others like them.

But it is important that folks have their fun at the expense of such people. It is important that we keep our sense of humor, I guess.

I could, but then I think of the heart episode during Frances. Then I can not think this is funny.

60. If only the Florida election commission
was wiped out by a Cat 5 Hurricane then it would be fine. However that isn't what is going to happen. My elderly in-laws, both dems and both in their 70's live in Tampa and we are monitoring Ivan because their life might depend on what they do in the next 24-48 hours. I also have a 16 year old, dem to be, stepson in Tampa and again we worry.

This is one of the top 5 most powerful Hurricanes ever recorded and whoever gets him at landfall will be devastated. I don't want anyone, especially our elderly and young children to go through this. As someone who went through a tornado with a small boy who was aged 7 at the time, these incidents leave scars way after the insurance money (if they have insurance) is settled. PTSD is real and stays with you for years, if you're lucky to recover.

Catwoman is having some fun here and we love her but she may be close to the truth whether some want to accept it or not. The very same Bible/ King James, that Bush and his crime family reads, that this bunch has hijacked my faith has a quote that says, "God has his way in the whirlwind". While we are dropping bombs on Iraq and Afganistan, there are a lot of innocents dying here and some not so innocent. See, I believe God will send a message for using his name and causing destruction. Seems we have had a few category 4 and 5 whirlwinds at the scene of the crime. ITs always called ..Forces of Nature..An act of God..so if I was a Bush lover in florida, I would be thinking.hmmmmmm..Maybe George isn't really God's man afterall." Maybe we don't want to tick off the big man upstairs by disenfranchising voters and stopping the vote. May seem unfair about the innocents but that same Bible says it rains on the just and the unjusts so........

Maybe the Man upstairs wants the Bush lovers of Florida to take a hint, Just my opinion. By the way, Most all of my family is in Florida. I think God and I do believe in a loving God but I think God can be a God of wrath as well. You just don't keep calling yourself his messenger, while your brother is messing with the people of Florida. I believe the folks who have been hurt by this administration will be OK. these whirlwinds just may make a few folks stop and think not all desstruction comes from terrorists and they may rethink Global Warming.
