Cheney's over the top remark... doesn't jibe with administration
tied folks stating on the record that another terrorist attack on US soil was "inevitable..." Can't remember who - but that statement was made earlier this year (late spring or early summer.)

So Dick, perhaps we need to pull those words out and parallel them to yours... and ask - so who do we blame next time, Dick? The folks who bankrupted the government and diverted vast resources away from the hunt and capture of al qeada? The folks who can do this (and even go on the record to say so) "because it is inevitable"... and thus why spend money trying to prevent it when we can have more tax cuts and a unneeded war in Iraq? Nah...

ties... but it could have been Ashcroft... part of his push for why he should have even more power (the self-deluded-messianic nutball scares the heck out of me...)

3. Cheny and FBI Mueller both said it in May
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/cheney_05-20-02.html

Vice President Dick Cheney and the FBI director stepped up their warnings that further attacks on U.S. targets both domestically and abroad are inevitable.

"I think that the prospects of a future attack on the U.S. are almost a certainty," Cheney said on "Fox News Sunday." "It could happen tomorrow, it could happen next week, it could happen next year, but they will keep trying. And we have to be prepared." ..snip...

"There's no question that there were failures," Cheney said. "But I can't say at this point that even if we had all those pieces together that it would have led to the conclusion that they were going to hit the Trade Center, the Pentagon, et cetera."

On Monday, FBI Director Robert Mueller told a meeting of the National Association of District Attorneys that, "there will be another terrorist attack. We will not be able to stop it. It's something we all live with."

Asked about those attacks taking the form of individual suicide bombers like those in Israel, Mueller said, "I think we will see that in the future, I think it's inevitable."

6. Cheney repeats it on Meet the Press...
http://www.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/05/19/cheney.terrorism/

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The possibility of another attack against the United States is "very real," Vice President Dick Cheney said Sunday.

Recent reports of increased communications among suspected al Qaeda operatives are reminders that the war against terrorism remains in high gear, Cheney said.

"In my opinion, prospects of a future attack against the United States is almost certain," he said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "We don't know if it's going to be tomorrow or next week or next year." He added that it was "not a matter of if, but when."

5. IMO Cheney knew exactly what he was saying...it's a typical GOP tactic...
Time and again the Rethugs have put a major stink-bomb out there, and by the time all the retractions (or "refinements") have been made days later, the news cycle has moved on. The false message tends to stick somewhat just by its timing, and then they're on to the next lie.

I wish Kerry would call them on this pattern.
