44. Socialist? Socialists are not Dems, and vice versa.
Socialists are those who practice/believe in the following:
1 : any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2 a : a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b : a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3 : a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done .

We live in a capitalistic republic, not a socialistic one. I'm a registered Democrat. Far from being a socialist. Why would a socialist belong to the Dem. Party instead of their own party, like they used to in 1940s or thereabouts?

2. I call myself a socialist.
I've been a registered Democrat since 1966 but have always told anyone who asks that I'm Socialist. Some are amazed that socialists are allowed to actually walk around freely.

"Progressive" has too vague a ring to it.

14. Me too, and I agree:
"Progressive" has too vague a ring to it.

It's contentless branding, like "new and improved - Now, 20% more radicalized!"

I'm a socialist, proud to be called such, and happy to have a party where I'm at home.

12. Another socialist
but that's really only for want of a better term - I don't think I really fit within any political category that neatly but socialism is the closest fit. I'm not sure whether I'd refer to myself as a Dem if I were a US citizen - I don't identify much with the ALP here anymore so probably not.

i have for the last ten years called myself a "radical pragmatist"

as a pragmatist, i want to see political, social, fiscal and other solutions to community problems that are empowering, respectful, inclusive and environmentally friendly.

where the radical part comes in, is that i want those solutions NOW- i'm tired of bs'ing around.

26. Liberal & member of the Democratic Party, but I can also think for myself.
I want the word "liberal" to be rescued from the negative handcuffs that the right wing has put on it.

I'll probably always be a registered Democrat (if the two-party system survives), but in areas where my Party refuses to go, or goes too timidly, I will speak out.

28. I call myself a Leftist
I favor reform through the Democratic party, and think that media and memes are really the most important aspect of politics. The reason that we are in this position now (America is more conservative than it was 30 years ago in many ways) is that Big Money has funded think tanks and foundations to create a world view that favors rightwing views.

If create a Leftist worldview and vocabulary, the country will move left.

30. I am a conservative. A conservative Democrat. A conservative
secular Democrat leaning toward becoming a revolutionary or perhaps a hermit. I am a civil libertarian, racially sensitive, politically enlightened, environmentally aware, fiscal conservative who votes Democratic because 90% of the good things done by the national gov't have been done by Democrats.

42. I'm a liberal who votes democratic at this time in history
I'd vote for a liberal republican, if there were any left, if he or she was the best candidate for the job.

I like William Weld, if he is still as liberal as he used to be. I liked Rudy during and after 9-11, because he did handle it so well. I'm not real big on some of his policies, especially the police brutality incidents that occurred when he was mayor. I like former Michigan governor William Milliken and I like Gerald Ford.
