So Bush is going to say he is "proud of his NG service?" Proud that he
was pushed ahead of thousands of others, some of whom died in combat?

2. It's a tricky thing
I have a friend in the Guard, a pretty liberal fellow, but every time he hears the slams on National Guard Service it gets him all fired up, and with some reason. You can't really compare his situation and his service (he's out this week, having been called up because of Ivan, missing a week of school so far) to Bush's champagne unit. By attacking President Bush's National Guard as not really having served his country, there could be a blow back. That's why the AWOL story is a bit better in my opinion.

3. I wish that the distinction wasn't too fine for folks to discern
Bush used power to jump ahead of others to gain a sport in the stateside guard. There was NO danger of him going to fight. He willfully and actively ducked combat - someone else went off to die in his place.

The Guard is an honorable means of service to your contry. Quite so, in fact. The issue is NOT with the Guard - the issue is with GWB's misuse of the service for his personal safety. Further, he defames the Guard and all associated with the Guard when he states that his service is something to be proud of - he lied about service, was AWOL and refused a direct order to avoid the detection of his drug abuse.

4. Yeppers
father-in-law feels the same way. He thinks all Nat'l Guard service is being slandered. If only he could see it's Bush's fault it is.
