Do Freepers even have jobs?
Judging by all the obnoxious posts on Yahoo, I'm led to believe that these people don't work. Because how could anyone hire people THAT STUPID?

1. Legacies?
They don't have to be smart-they are living off old money. Or they are so ignorant they don't understand that the Repukes are only for the rich.

2. My suspicions about rightwing posting on the Net
I suspect that some of the freepers as you call them are fairly young people (20-40 yo) who are interested in working in politics. They see making a name for themselves in Net research as an avenue in.

Also, I suspect some of them are paid. After all, ideas can be spread via the Net, just like TV, newspapers etc. And we know that rich people and corporations have funded think tanks and foundations to the tune of $2 billion. So why not spend some money on the Net. I mean, I myself have set a mission for myself of posting on internet forums such as Slashdot.org and fark.com in order to spread left wing ideas. It took me quite a lot of research to get the information I need to be a good leftist poster. And I am somewhat "overeducated". But I tell you, many times my posts are rebutted by rightwing posters, and rebutted fairly well, I might add. There are MANY well read and well informed right wing posters on Net forums. Or at the least they have a good script. This tends to make me think that some of them are paid posters.

Also, taking this idea of paid RW posters to its logical extreme--they may be INDIAN, or at least they may be Indian in the near future. Yes, some of the RW posters you read may be OUTSOURCED!

THat is a scary damn scenario.

4. I agree with you about the paid posters.
I've run into them in many forums especially about health care and social security. The insurance companies and HMO's hire PR firms to sway an issue in their favor. I have seen them turn a forum on national health care from everyone being in favor of it to sowing confusion with some well chosen "facts".

One poster even directed everyone to a hastily constructed website raving about the evils of Canada's and England's health care system with personal horror stories supposedly of both patients and health care providers. The website disappeared within days, but not before having the effect of poisoning the well. They are very slick, but easy to spot if you know your facts.

Even if you try to out them, they will never admit that they are paid shills but you can destroy their propaganda with facts. But they just pop up elsewhere, so it's really like running around trying to put out fires with glasses of water.

5. After observing them for a long, long time
I gather that a great many of them are retirees. They talk about their physical maladies, their retirement funds, vacations to places old people favor, and when certain older celebrities are in the news, they're reminiscing about really old movies and songs. Maybe that's why it's difficult for them to gather together a good crowd for a freep. The younger ones are game, but the older ones just can't make it.

7. The reason that most FReepers are older
Is because the young ones, who believe in and support Bush and his wars, are in Iraq protecting our freedoms...

9. Just judging by the number of deleted posts here
I'd have to say there's a lot of freepers with time on their hands and nothing better to do than disrupting good progressive boards like here.

10. I'm friends with two freeper types
Edited on Wed Sep-15-04 12:46 AM by FrankBooth
I've known both of these guys from the college days, I like them in moderation. They are both early 30s, white, clean cut/white collar kind of guys. Neither of them has evolved politically at all since then. That was quite a while ago, and I am definitely less myopic and ideological than I was when I first knew them, but both of them still calls me "communist" or "socialist" which is ridiculous, because I'm really just a left-moderate democrat. I also suspect that neither of them realizes that "communist" and "socialist" are distinct terms.

These guys are irredeemable. George W. Bush could don a nazi swastika armband and they would still support him. Their "conservatism" is a fundamental part of their self-identities, and for them to doubt conservatism would require an ugly
re-assesment of their own self-worth, a revelation much too painful for them to think about. They are long gone, and it would take some kind of personal catastrophic event for them to ever change, and even in that event it is unlikely.
