Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------
The back story comes from the 2000 election. Bush won Florida by 537 votes. Nader, the Green Party candidate, got 98,000 votes, with analysts saying most of those votes would have gone to Gore if Nader were not on the ballot.
Last week a Florida Circuit Court judge issued a temporary injunction to keep Nader OFF the 2004 ballot, saying Nader did not follow state law for minor candidates.
End of story? Of course not.
The hearing for the permanent injunction was scheduled for tomorrow.
ENTER Hurricane Ivan, and the strained logic of Florida's Republican-appointed state election director, Dawn Roberts.
Roberts said the hurricane raised a "substantial question as to when such a hearing" would be held. So Roberts said Nader will be on the ballot despite the injunction (the power to do this comes from the state's appeal of the temporary injunction... which automatically lifts it.)
Secretary of State Glenda Hood ordered Florida's 67 election supervisors today to add Nader's name to the ballot. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0409140116sep14,1,7557289.story?coll=chi-newsnationworld-hed Florida Democrats are now crying "blatant partisan maneuvering" by the President's brother, Governor Jeb Bush, and are promising a fight. Surprised?
Add two more legs to this one:
The Florida Supreme Court decided Monday to take up the issue of Nader's candidacy.
And Florida Elections Supervisors face a Saturday deadline to mail absentee ballots, with or without Nader's name.

* More back and forth on those Killian memos regarding Bush's guard service.
The lead expert retained by CBS News to examine the controversial memos says he examined only the late officer's signature and made no attempt to authenticate the documents themselves.

* Keith's look at Dirty Tricks of campaign's past.

* Car Chase Shocker: Man drops baby out of car while being chased by police. The baby was in a car seat. Baby lives. Video at 8.
* Bad Sport: Texas Rangers relief pitcher Frank Francisco was arrested on aggravated assault charges after throwing a chair into the stands during a game against the Oakland A's last night. Two fans were injured, one woman's nose was broken. C'mon, Frank.
Finally,
Yesterday we learned you could get arrested for leaving a bad tip.
Today we KNOW that you can get convicted for a practical joke.
Paul Goudy was sentenced to probation, a $500 fine and an apology after for snatching the hairpiece from an unsuspecting man at a Pennsylvania restaurant. Goudy snatched the man's gold chain AND hairpiece, apparently in one fell swoop, after his buddy dared him to do it for 100 bucks.
Goudy plead guilty to theft by unlawful taking.
Now justice has been served. Message: hands off the hairpiece, hands off the bling. And ignore your stupid friends.
