To DUers who are communicating by cell with evacuating
persons: Please be advised that I live 20 miles south of Lafayette, LA. Lafayette is on Interstate 10, but its hotels/motels are totally filled. If you have anyone that you are communticating with by cell phone, who needs to find shelter and get off of I 10, please DU email me.

P.S. If the hurricane jogs a little to the west, we will be evacuating too---altho I hear that we can't get on the 2 interstates in the area because of the traffic.

1. What are the local news outlets saying about it jogging west?
My parents are evacuating from Kenner to a cousin's house in Lafayette, and the house is half-empty since my cousin is in the process of moving back home to New Orleans. They'll have no phone, so I've instructed them to contact my by phone card at a pay phone.

I'm hoping that it stays on a path away from New Orleans (no offense to MS and AL DUers), but I don't really trust the weathercasters. They told us all that Charlie would be going to Tampa Bay, and now we have the residents of Punta Gorda in a fix.. :(

2. The local weather broadcasters said tonight
that we should be safe in this area...they echo the Weather Channel, it will hit Mobile, Pensacola, Biloxi area. We will get some bad weather, but they don't seem to think it will jog west. BUT, you know how that goes. I teach school, and school is on for tomorrow and Thursday, so far. Lafayette should be safe, its about 30 miles north of Vermilion Bay. Let me know if I can be of any help.

3. Thanks so much -
Do you know if WWL in New Orleans has brought-out Nash Roberts? (he's still around, right?) It's been 8 years since I've lived in New Orleans, but when you see Nash, you know things are serious.. :P

I do not keep up with any of the happenings in New Orleans, so can't tell you. NO is 3 hours east driving time, and we try not to go there for any reason!!
