started with Koppel reading from a letter from a soldier in Iraq where he described it as exactly like Vietnam...everyone hates us, they want us gone, but they are worried that civil war will break out...

I heard him take a serious jab at the American media, assumed he was speaking personally (and self-critically), but maybe it came from the letter you referenced?

Nearly verbatim quote:

13. I just can't believe the devastation in Bagdad

Ted Koppel is at least trying to cover a story that is being ignored by the media in general.

This story should be the majority of the news right now, forget Kohbe, Jackson, Peterson...and focus on what is really important for once!

The REAL direction of our country and what is going on in Iraq, Korea, Iran and so on and so forth.

Thanks to Koppel for talking about what all other journalists should be more focused on!

I thought the embedded piece (Gosk) was weak. Does everyone know that this was footage from the Najaf conflict? They did this before, when Najaf blew up in August, they ran an embedded report from the previous battle in April.

For me, the embedded pieces are inherently weak, they seem like PR pieces to me. 110 people died in Iraq yesterday, and we're hearing about the toilets that the troops use.

The program got better when Burns was on, he gave some perspective that the interviews with our brave troops didn't come anywhere near.

Interestingly, it seemed Nightline was defensive about the embedded reporting. Both Koppel and Gosk devoted a couple of sentences to defending that type of reporting. I wonder if a lot of people have been complaining. I know I have.
