Attn Software Developers & Activists: New Proposal for Discussion
Hello all,

If you made it this far then at least the title grabbed your attention so please read on.

I am a senior software designer for one of the largest computer companies in the world (yes its a short list) and am looking for similar individuals that might be interested in participating in an "open source" style project to benefit "our side", so to speak. I am posting this notice only on DU at this time since the proposal is for a system that indexes and archives "progressive" content from the vast number of bloggers, indymedia, etc that is sometimes only seen by those of us who actively seek out "truth" and "informed" opinion.

The intent of this notice is to announce a new IRC channel on Undernet called "DU" to solicit input and freely discuss the merits, possibilities, and possible folly of such an idea.

I will say up front this is intended to be a major effort so we are talking about leveraging many existing technologies such as P2P networks for archiving/storage and Cognitive Agent Technology for searching and categorizing just to mention some of the direction.

So, come join us on Undernet over the next several weeks and put your 2cents in relative to this proposal. Maybe we can get something happening maybe not... but a solid discussion is the first step.

Thanks,

MZr7

6. Not finding the DU channel
First time I've been up on Undernet. I'm selecting Channels and searching for DU and it comes up with a series of unrelated sites.

What am I missing?

11. Here are the details....
Fire up your favorite IRC client and point it to the server us.undernet.org (port 6667) Once connected simply do a /join #DU and you should end up on the channel we are using.

If its still not working for you, spend some time at http://www.irchelp.org - most of the basics are covered there.

Good luck and we hope you join us.

9. I'd love to be involved.....
however, I'm not sure my experience matches up but new experience is good.

I have been developing software for more years than I want to admit. I have coded everything from the old stuff: BAL, fortran, RPG, Pascal and more to the newer (relativly) everything Microsoft (VC++, VBA, VB, ASP, DCOM, etc etc) and ton of database experience Oracle, SQL Server, and others I hate to admit. Plus, I have MDB experience.

I have impemented several sophisticated TCP/IP applications.

Even though I have not had much experience with open source, I have yet to meet a technology I couldn't figure out.

If I can help let me know how to contact you for more discussions and/or send you my contact information.

10. Meeting Schedule
Thanks to everyone that responded to this thread. We had a couple of folks on-line last night and started discussions in a very "general" sense about what this "thing" should look like.

While it is too early to have a definite meeting schedule, it is looking like evenings are going to be the best times initially to catch us all on IRC.

So, stop by and contribute your two cents. At this point your technology base is not important since we are mainly discussing functionality, look and feel, funding, etc....

Thanks,
MZr7
