19. "Healthcare" is killing us at a rate of nearly 600,000 a year.
90,000 dying from diseases contracted while hospitalized (CDC report cited in USA Today, March 1998).

106,000 dying from being given the right drug in the right dosage, with about 2.1 million being hospitalized or permanently disabled from the same cause (Journal of the American Medical Association, 1998).

400,000 dying as a result of medical malpractice (estimate by David Lawrence, former CEO of Kaiser Permanente, quoted in the Oakland Tribune, August 1999).

Total: 596,000.

That's about 100 times worse than US casualties in Vietnam, every year...

(Dates are approximate as it's late and I'm doing this from memory.)

Bush is a bigger threat to this country than any of your poll options.

10. uncompetetive house districting
According to the economist, only 30 seats in the house of representatives
are competetive, meaning that all the others are safe seats for their
parties due to obscure gerrymandering. This creates an environment
where the extremists within each party get to hyjak democracy in
the primary (which is in effect the election in a safe seat). The
result is a house that is completely broken and failing to function
as what it was intended to be, a representative voice of the populace.

This same arrangement is blocking badly needed campaign finance
controls that, by their absence are further endangering the republic.

Bush is just a symptom of this deep and troubling failure.

The article is premium content, but worth getting the print edition
for... (as well a very good article on the voting machine's)
Pyongyang on the Potomac?
Sep 16th 2004
From The Economist print edition

The battle for control of the Senate is tight; the battle for the House of Representatives is a travesty of democracy

12. an uninformed, disinterested electorate ...
corporate interests that put profits ahead of the interests of the American people are indeed the main enemy to be battled but they would not be successful if voters were well informed on the issues ...

if we continue to fail to educate the electorate and continue to energize them to participate in the political process, we will never be successful ...

your question did not ask who the enemy was ... it asked what the greatest threat facing America is ... and sadly, the answer is an uninformed, disinterested electorate ...

20. Bush voters and non voters
Edited on Tue Sep-21-04 04:32 AM by sffreeways
All of the Americans that are voting for Bush and going along with our decent into fascism.

And even worse, the people that can vote but don't.

Because they will be responsible for everything that happens to this country ultimately. Every last one of them.

Terror
Poverty
Crime
Corruption
Oppression here and abroad
Wars
The medical crisis
Losing Social Security and Medicare
Loss of Jobs
The destruction of our constitution

You get what I mean

Simply itself.

The next election should be a real poll for knowing if American people want to come back in the democracy and peace camp or to lead themselves and the world with them into a dangerous adventure. (but, is the majority of American people aware ?)
