1. LMAO. I'm staying.
Not that I wouldn't LOVE to live in Ireland. But I am well aware of the obstacles. But I don't have the money.

And since I am related to about half of Luxembourg and have relatives there who are judges, I could have the way smoothed to go there. I have been told that.

Other things keep me here, things that are near and dear to my heart. Home is home.

If the dem operative had any smart, they'd turn this whole mess into a Rove trick. Crank up the echo chamber, let it fly on every network. Sew the seeds of doubt, turn their own bullshit on them.

But it hardly spells the end of anything yet, except maybe CBS's ad rates during the news.

10. I'm glad the talk is about BUSH's pathetic Guard "service" not SBV's
Whatever all this brou-ha-ha did, it did change the conversation from Kerry's war record to Bush's. All in all, its old news, and immaterial to 2004. Bush has done FAR worse in the past 30 days than he did 30 years ago.

We need to be trumpeting the fact that our guy got off the best shots of the campaign today -- and made the best speech so far. What's Bush going to say at the UN tomorrow?

AM HIST - 2000-2010
Many Americans that felt that the country was going in the wrong direction left for foreign soil. Those that were left searched for leaders, and found some, but the leaders were ineffectual. The EVENT of 2007 occurred in a thought vacuum. When civilized society reemerged in 2103, many scholars blamed the holocaust on the mass exodus.

23. I don't think
it's very nice to mock people because they are afraid. Honestly, we have good reason to be. Instead of humiliating our fellow DU'ers for their valid feelings it would be more compassionate to reassure them if you feel so confident that things won't get out of hand (not that they haven't already but more out of hand than they are). Besides won't you feel like a jerk if you end up being wrong.

I think people are genuinely afraid, I know I'm very concerned about things like small pox and suitcase nukes. If you give any of those things some thought they can really work you into a lather.

Without having even a wild imagination if the two terrible things I mentioned happened even if you weren't one of the people directly attacked the repercussions of them would be horrendous. The food shortages if a port were attacked, the panic, the world could become our worst nightmare overnight. And isn't that what people are really expressing ? The fear that W will turn our country into a war zone from coast to coast as his power is threatened or increased. Friggen frightening stuff.

I know the Nazi Germany analogy is cliche but I'm sure there were Germans assuring other Germans they were being alarmist when they were considering fleeing too. And I think that's the worst fear, that like those Germans that stayed who wanted to leave when things hadn't taken a turn for the worst yet they don't want to find themselves deeply regretting their decision.

If I had children (sigh) I would probably be far more concerned than I am.

Sorry if this sounds like a lecture U ( I get annoyed with lecturing myself) but I feel empathy for people that are scared. My Mom is frightened and she talks about getting us out of here too. And she isn't a DU'er or reading stuff on the INTERNET and getting all worked up.

Even if it's just about the political stuff, who the hell wants to live in a fascist shit hole ? I know I don't want some jackboot knocking on my door and taking me away to a football stadium for processing into the re-education camp in Utah where you swear a loyalty oath to Dick Cheney or have your brain microwaved.

Anyone that's afraid my message is don't panic. If you really want to leave make some plans for an emergency. Pick a destination and put some money away and for chrissake take a break from the INTERNET and the television for awhile. Maybe even talk with your Dr. about a mild tranquilizer to calm yourself down a bit. Decide what the threshold is for leaving. Don't drive yourself mad and terrorize your kids and your aging parents with your own anxiety. It's like planning for any emergency, when you have a plan to fall back on and you're prepared it takes the edge off.

I just don't think it's that silly to be afraid. A lot of folks never imagined in their wildest moments we would be in a situation like this in America. That alone is very disconcerting. You have my sympathy.

Go ahead now and make fun of me for being a total turd if you must.

No. I understand being scared, too. Trust me.

But I don't understand this urge on the left to run away, leaving behind those who can't run. That's not the left in which I believe, and I don't think it's the left in which you believe either.

and I'm not leaving. But I have an option with family in France.

People are already arming themselves to the teeth. I think that scares me more than anything. That the freeper types will either panic or get so drunk with power we are going to see things like shootings at our voting stations.

I will never forget when I found DU. I was new to the internet, just got my first computer and wanted to check out political stuff (after I looked at the dirty stuff and the weird shit)The election debacle was full throttle. I typed in something that led me to freerepublic and I thought ...huh, that's cool sounds like my kinda site so I surfed on over and my damn head nearly exploded. Not only were they ranting about DU (which was great because that's how I found this place) but they were seriously talking about shooting du'ers and swearing they would shoot liberals if the Supreme Court decided Gore was going to be aloud to have those votes counted. It was not just one or two nuts either it was so many of them it was nearly a militia. Scared the crap outta me ! Would it have actually happened ? I don't know. It may have and the possibility still exists.

I refuse to buy a gun because of all of this. People are doing everything they can and this could be the real source of the panic here. Unlike the rest of the population DU'ers in general are working their collective butts off to do something about this lunatic in our White House and it's getting us nowhere.

Everyday it's more crappy news. John Kerry should be ahead by a landslide and I don't believe or I'm not saying it's Kerry or the Kerry message. In a rational United States, in the America we all thought we were living in after Bill Clinton and the peace and prosperity we all enjoyed we should have never seen another republican even come close. That's what gets me. How could this be ??? Even with the 9/11 attacks before Bush we were strong, things were good for most people and the possibility for those that it hadn't reached yet for their lives getting better was there. The whole damn world has turned upside down and there is no rationality to what is happening.

The unknown is what scares human beings the most and since everything we knew to be true in the past is not what it should be the uncertainty is freaking people out.

I'm not leaving and I would try to pursuade anyone that wants to to reconsider at this point but if they don't have the guts hell they will only get in the way when the shit hits the fan anyway. I think fear is what's driving most of the people above the 30 percent of nutcases that really like George Bush to say they are going to vote for him anyway. Let em go if they can't cope. There is nothing worse than someone that's terrified in an emergency anyway. It's the folks that are scared to death that will be the first ones to help the Junta if the going gets tuff.

How to give the left the grit it used to have for the fight ahead is beyond me now. You are right ! I used to think it was the left that would always come through for America but that's just not the case anymore. The only thing I think might juice people up would be to find out that Bush was directly involved in the attacks, that he knew. Unrefutable proof. Then there would be so much collective rage that the left would find it's nuts wherever they hid em. That or a charasmatic leader like King. Otherwise we can sit tight for some time to come by the looks of things. It's just the idea that Kerry isn't winning by a landslide that has got me concerned. By all means he should be. I don't know what the hell is wrong with people.

On the home page is a letter I wrote to Bush about the woman that was arrested the other day for protesting Pickles. Now that scares me. That SCARES me ! She is the mother of a dead soldier and they had absolutley no problem with carting her off even though she was only talking with reporters not disrupting the rally at that point. Outside talking with reporters. Those cops didn't even look reluctant. Like they had been given orders to do something really wrong. When I was 18 or 20 I thought about being a cop. But times were politically turbulent (Bush 1 of course) and I told myself I could never arrest anyone for protesting to preserve the right of women to have an abortion. When the police do what those cops did we have a major problem. They literally arrested her for what she was saying. There should have been an outcry over that like we have never heard before. With all of the support the troops flag wrapped patriotism going on you would think the mother of a soldier killed in Iraq would be hands off unless she was waving an uzi around. Nope, she got busted. That's scary.

Oh, and I think your thread is great now that I see the discussion. I'm glad you posted this because it's a good motivation to really chew on the seriousness of the subject. I don't agree with the others that think you are out of line and should get the alert button. I just don't think trying to embarass anyone into finding their courage is very effective that's all.

24. It is an eternal struggle.
This is but another hurdle in the step toward progress which is what the human experience should be all about. If we do not progress, we either stagnate or regress. We must also take the time to consider the historical context in which we live. The rise of religious fundamentalism across the world in this age of the millenium may be rationalized as periodical hysteria. It has happened before.

The question is how to combat it.

30. US fundamentalists aren't THAT powerful
Aside from the whole question of nuclear war, which only the hyper-religious would want, it is basic human nature to progress, not regress. Bushco and the whole neoCon backlash is the roar of a dying dinosaur; the beginning of the end of WASP domination. They are being overrun by the demographics of other cultures. They may be succeeding in propagandizing some of their WASP kids to carry on for a while, but the future is muti-ethnic and not very religious. There were backlashes against the Enlightenment, but science prevailed. This may be a rough patch, but the instinct for survival will win over religious death-impulses.

59. "We may hope" question for ya.....
so, that means that when others disagree with you, you are turned around by them slapping you around? That makes you sit up and take notice, and change your ways?

38. Three of these stupid threads. Depressed people should be prohibited
from posting - especially before an election. I'm serious - just read post's and don't share your fears.

53. Yeah, I'm going to leave the United States and all its WMDs to Freepers
We have a responsibility to fight for our country. My ancestors were here before the first colonists were and no freeper is going to chase me off my homeland. Fuck that crap. Say I were to move to Canada..what would that do but leave the world's most powerful military and the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the hands of Freepers with no one to control them. What are they going to do? Attack every country for it's resources. Gee whiz, get a fucking grip, people.

but I gave it up awhile back. Let the rest catch up. .. If they want to.

I'm not AFRAID anymore. (That was my favorite part of F911.. the explanation of Rule by FEAR.)

It is good to look both ways before you cross the street. Then Cross It.
