"Extreme Oil" and what it's doing (done) to Ecuador
I watched this program.. What a pity.. There is so much oil pollution in Ecador and probably most othetr oil-producing countries in South America.. The companies (Texaco primarily) ravaged the place getting to the oil, polluted the whole place, and they left..:(.. These indigenous people do not have the knowledge or financial capabilities to clean the mess up..

This is what Globalization has to offer poor countries.. We will extract their "resources", give the money to corrupt leaders who WE install...and then we leave the mess behind:(

Be sure and look for this program on your local PBS station..

1. No, that is not globalization
Edited on Tue Sep-21-04 12:46 AM by Maple
That is imperialism, and colonialization.

The same kinds of things happened in the fifties...even the 1850s.

Genuine globalization will prevent this, not cause it.

Please stop confusing old left wing ideology with the 21st century.

2. Globalization...colonialism...old...new.... whatever it's called
Edited on Tue Sep-21-04 12:50 AM by SoCalDem
it's EVIL.. I think that the SCALE and SPEED is what is different now..

At least in the "olden times", the colonizers actually lived in the place, so there was SOME incentive to at least TRY to make the place liveable.. For the most part, the way things are done these days, the local people are actually conned into giving up their "antiquated" way of life for a pittance of wages, and are brought part-way into modernity, but not enough for them to see what the longterm result will be..

Once the "wealth" is removed, they are left, jobless, sick and with no way to support themselves on destroyed and polluted land..

The program did not say that this is anything new..just an evolving danger to all poor people everywhere there is oil...or the potential of oil..

4. I'm sorry, but they're not remotely the same thing
and stop labelling ordinary human actions 'evil'...this isn't a Republican site.

In the 'olden times' :eyes: ...the owners lived at home in ye comfy olde England, and they weren't the least interested in how their workers and the wogs lived.

You are confusing 2 entirely different eras, and 2 entirely different movements. Please stop.

You are only hurting yourself.

One world, one race.

THAT is globalization.

14. Sorry Maple but you are mistaken, very very mistaken

Globlization is bullshit, but hey you are free to engage in delusional thinking if you want.

The IMF and World Bank, backed by global capital has systematically destroyed countries that have put in place the neo-liberal policies stipulated by the IMF. Globalization, like Free Trade, is simply a code word for rape.

12. Wow! Sounds just like a little too much of what is happening here,
right now, in the good ole' US of A. Hmmmm.....Let's just skip "globalization" and go straight to the heart of it. ELITISTS!

(sometimes known as robber barons, kings/queens, dynasties, etc and so on and so forth) Rothschilds, Rockefellers.......)

familiar term: military-industrial complex
(Dear President Eisenhower warned us about that in his farewell speech to the nation, beware of the...).

5. Globalization:
an awareness that there is one world, and one race. The human one.

And that solutions to war, famine, poverty and the environment have to be on a global scale. No one country can solve them.

No more separate countries or nation-states. They are a recent invention anyway. They are now states, or prefectures, or provinces of a global whole. No little 'border wars' between them, endangering everybody.

We are all equal...and all humans everywhere should have at least the basics: food, water, shelter, clothing, healthcare, education.

A holistic view if you will.

One world, one race.

7. Global-
ization. Globe. All of us. Everyone on the globe.

No 191 separate countries. No 'races'. No 'culture clash'. The UN, World Bank, WTO...only ones that actually work for people, not just decorations.

One world, one race.

8. Genuine
"Genuine" Genuine...
By the way there are many races on the face of this earth.
My question is what do you mean by genuine?

9. Genuine= real
as opposed to old ideas of colonialization.

Everybody gets to be a player this time around. Not just the currently rich countries exploiting the currently poor countries.

And no, there aren't 'many' races...there is only one race.

The human race.

We all have the same DNA. We are all the same species.

Skin color is as irrelevant as hair or eye color.

And eventually we'll all be brown.

10. If We Keep
On polluting as we are then even the humans will not be able to exist.
Even races of birds and fish will be extinct and then the humans.
Left to the human race we won't be rulers of the other races for much longer.
Some readings of Jane Jacobs might be a good starting point or animal farm.
As an alternate perhaps a viewing of Naomi Klein/Avi Lewis production of:

Occupy, Resist, Produce: New Documentary "The Take" Takes on Globalization

http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=04/09/20/144215

I like your idealism.

11. And if you globalize
you will be able to clean up pollution world wide.

It doesn't do you one bit of good to fix just one country you know...it's a small world, and crud drifts in no matter how hard you try.

No one said anything about 'ruling' anybody. I distinctly said equal.

And we've all read Animal Farm in high school, thanks, and Jane Jacobs since then.

As an alternative, put the left/right hokum of the industrial age behind you, and start living in the 21st century.

None of that old capitalism/socialism stuff applies anymore. Stop fighting old battles. Both Adam Smith and Karl Marx are long since dead.

PS...I have never been an idealist. I am solely pragmatic.

13. I'd like to see the globalization you describe,
but it's not there.

Globalization as it is now is being promoted and implemented by the radical capitalist types, and it is nothing but privitization and deregulation on a global scale. Privitization of everything equates to corporations owning everything, and by extension ruling everything.
For corporations things like environmental regulations and labour unions are trade barriers that have to be eliminated.
