Who can tell me how to find out if my friend is still registered to
vote. He called me in a panic last night. He is doing business in Costa Rica for the rest of the year but is flying in just for the election (he doesn't trust absentee voting). He lives in Long Beach. Can I find out on line or does anyone have a number I can call? I have his social and other info. that I need. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

1. Just register him again
If he's already registered then he should go to the polling place where he went before. Better safe than sorry

2. Check with the local Election Board...............
explain the problem and see if they can give you any information for your friend over the phone.

3. How do I find out? How do I get in touch with the election board?
I don't know how he can register again since he's in Costa Rica.

10. Google for the election board......................
of the city in which your friend resides.

Google will show you the board's phone numbers and the board's internet site, if they have one. Look around on their internet site and see if they have a database for registered voters to verify their polling place.

They have such a feature on the Kansas City, MO Election Board site and, with my brother's name, previous address and date of birth, I was able to verify what his polling place was (he hadn't voted in years and wasn't sure where to vote) for the Missouri primaries in February or March.

4. Call the registrar. It's PUBLIC information. There's no 'privacy' there.

I've called to check on close relatives and they had no problem telling me. I just gave the name, but the address helps for common names.

Depending on what state you live in, the registrar may be a county official or a city/town official. Here in Michigan, it's at the city level: the City Clerk. In California, it's at the county level.

6. All you need is a name and address in California

Contact the County Registrar of Voters. If he didn't vote in the last general election there is a chance he got dropped from the rolls. Send him a new voter regisration form and have him re-register just to be safe (any county form will work and will be forwarded to the appropriate county).

including how to vote absentee.
