Should Dan Rather be fired? MSNBC poll......
Do you think Dan Rather should be fired for the fake documents scandal at CBS? * 57157 responses

Yes 54%

No 46%

What a shame. MSNBC has been bouncing off the wall with glee over this. That network deserves the pounding they're taking.

9. And after Novak goes to jail for outing an undercover agent,
and Bush is impeached for misleading us on WMD, and taking us to war on a lie.

The 9/11 incident

The status of WMD in Iraq

Hannity spouts hate propogranda every second he is on the air

24. These are all excellent points. Thanks
What the Bush* administration did was deliberate. They deserve to be run out of town on a rail. Dan Rather believed that this story, vetted by a veteran producer, was valid. The suggestion of firing him for this is just ludicrous. Of the "big three," he's the one I watch, since he always tells the truth.

11. This crap is really Through the Looking Glass...
What kind of "news organization" would field a poll asking whether a member of their own profession should be fired? It's freaking cannibalism.

It just proves the point that there are no journalists on television (other than Rather).

13. My letter to MSNBC, cc'd Rather, CBS

Who at CBS should be held accountable? Should be fired? Are you serious?

Really, that such a question can even be asked in this world where nobody has been held accountable for the 9.11 attacks is at best, laughable
Insulting to the families and friends of those killed that day who STILL have no accountability in their government.

Or how about the ongoing prison torture scandal (the troops that have had to take the fall for the sins pf the higher ups notwithstanding) that many fingers point but no real responsibility taken.

Is everyone really so frightened of Karl Rove that journalistic integrity is dropped like a dirty diaper the minute he says "boo"?

If we want to see made up, newslike entertainment we'll watch Fox.

Dare to be different and bring us actual news.
I'm sure there are a few things going on in the world worth talking about.

-eek

PS: You really owe CBS a thank you note for providing you with such juicy content.

15. Dan Rather has had a long, illustrious career
Are "they" so powerful that Dan has to worry about his job? Why isn't the media asking for W to be fired for leading us to a failed "war" that the entire world was against? (Somehow that seems to be a little more earth-shattering than Dan's situation).

17. MSNBC's revelling in this bad turn for CBS.
Dragging out every malignant old #### they can find to revile Dan Rather. One bustard claims to be circulating petitions to get him fired. He also has tried to force Kerry and Edwards to resign, earlier.

MSNBC is not professional. Their day-time people appear to be not one bit less crude, less ignorant than Fox, less irresponsible, just better done up, better looking, sorta. Everything you look for in a news station.....

27. I Just Think It's Such a Blatant Conflict That People Would Figure It Out
COCA-COLA POLL QUESTION:
Do you think Mountain Dew is disgusting?

WAL-MART POLL QUESTION:
Can K-Mart survive its financial turmoil?

SPRINT WEB QUESTION:
Is Nextel cell phone coverage horrible?

BUDWEISER POLL:
Is Miller Genuine Draft more filling and less tasty?

TGI FRIDAYS QUESTION OF THE DAY:
Does Applebees food taste like a clay shingle covered in gravy?

MICROSOFT POLL QUESTION:
Don't Apple products like PowerBooks and iPods suck ass?

=======================================================

You get the idea. The concept of having a corporation asking poll questions about how bad their competitor is -- I can't even put it into words.

Looks like it closed at 55-45; maybe the FReepers got a hold of it or something...

MSRNC is the only channel that obsessed with "Rathergate" (so they call it). I swear in the little bit of cable news viewing I do, they are more hung up on it than Faux News. I guess they figure their ratings suck so badly that they can talk about whatever meaningless and obscure shit that they want to and it won't make a difference anyway.

28. My email to MSNBC --

Fair poll question --

Do you think Dan Rather should be fired for the fake documents scandal at CBS?

I dare you to post this question along with another question -- this one - side by side - I dare you.

Do you think George W. Bush should be fired for the fake documents and information that caused us to go to war in Iraq?

Yes __ No __

How is it that you think Rather should be fired for being misled, yet Bush escapes accountability for "being misled" or worse for misleading himself.

29. Hartford Courant editorial calls on him to retire

Say Goodnight, Dan
September 22, 2004

Credibility is a journalist's core credential. What a shame that Dan Rather has gambled his away by trusting an "unimpeachable" source who turned out to be a partisan political operative and vehement critic of President Bush.

The CBS anchorman and producers of "60 Minutes" rushed a story about Mr. Bush's Air National Guard service on the air without thoroughly checking out their sources and documentation. Along the way, they either missed or ignored many red flags. When the story started to fall apart, Mr. Rather stood stubbornly behind it.

Were no lessons learned from the Jayson Blair incident last year that cost the New York Times' top editors their jobs? The CBS segment was at best a piece of very shoddy journalism. It constitutes a personal humiliation for the anchor and another black eye for the profession.

Bill Burkett, a retired National Guard official and a known Bush antagonist, has since been revealed as the bearer of dubious memos purporting to have been written in 1972 by a now-dead Bush superior officer, Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian. The memos chronicle Mr. Bush's failure to take a flight physical and special treatment while a member of the Texas Air National Guard. When asked by CBS where he got the memos, Mr. Burkett threw out what he later admitted was a "bogus name" that CBS could not authenticate. Still they went ahead with the story.

Mr. Burkett insists the memos are authentic but won't reveal his source. At this point, his credibility has sunk even lower than Mr. Rather's. CBS's analysts questioned the authenticity of the memos before the story was broadcast, yet Mr. Rather and company paid them no heed. For that, heads should roll.

Mr. Rather's admission of a "mistake in judgment" and subsequent on-air "I'm sorry" do not repair the credibility damage. He should take this opportunity to cut his losses and retire. CBS should clean house in its production department. Producer Mary Mapes should be the first to go. She not only got snookered along with Mr. Rather, she allegedly put Mr. Burkett in touch with a senior official in Sen. John Kerry's camp, reportedly in exchange for the memos. The Kerry campaign confirms the conversation, but denies that the Bush service record was discussed. Still, it looks bad. A journalist has no business making such connections.

This lapse of ethics feeds critics who will see the incident as an example of media bias and a campaign to discredit the president. The Dan Rather debacle is distasteful and sad, a discordant coda at the end of a distinguished career.

33. Screw the Hartford Courant, i.e.the Chicago Tribune
The Hartford courant is owned by the Tribune, employers of BOB NOVAK. Their lead editorial is written by the Tribune staff. Also the Courant endorsed Bush in 2000, that in a one of the poorest cities in the country. The Courant is a whore for the Tribune, which is a whore for the Republicans.

What Hypocrites.
