Has the flag been hijacked by the RW?
Edited on Tue Sep-21-04 04:41 PM by linazelle
I'm in a class in Oklahoma and we have to introduce ourselves by drawing a picture on our name tents :eyes: of something we like. The co-trainer draws a pic of a soldier and says "regardless of your political affiliation we have to support our troops." I shift uncomfortably in my seat. Today, Betsy Ross has hanging from her belt a small flag.

At home, I see lots of flags in the work place, at desks, decals on doors, and flying from cars and home fronts. This is in a workplace that denounces involvement in political activity.

I think that it's inappropriate to bring flags into the workplace because they have become nothing more than code for RW affiliation. These days, wrapped behind almost every flag is a right wing chickenhawk.

I love our country but I'm beginning resent to the flag because it no longer seems to be a symbol representing all of the states and citizens--but the few who support the right wing.

1. Nope.
I flew my flag all day at the Tailgate for the Eagles game yesterday and much of my Union garb carries the flag. Don't let them take it over. Remember WE are the ones who really stand for what the flag represents. Liberty, Justice, Honor and Integrity, Old Glory belongs to us.

2. I Saw A Cop Show Sunday
They came to a guy's house to serve an arrest warrant. There was a sawed off shotgun involved, they had to release the K9 to find the guy hiding in the basement. In short, not a nice guy.

But as they were hauling his carcass up the stairs, I couldn't help noticing the enormous 6 foot by 8 foot American flag this guy had in his basement hung like a tapestry.

So I guess the RW has hijacked the flag after all.

you gotta understand how mindless most americans are. never assume any intelligence, or thought is taking place. these people are actually too lazy to think, they are merely imitating each other.

4. And don't forget the RNC flag backdrop
It was like the flag on steroids--appropo for Schwarzenegger though. They are trying to take over the flag if they haven't succeeded.

5. Yep. It started during the Nixon years.
Edited on Tue Sep-21-04 04:57 PM by Cyrano
Everyone in Nixon's administration started wearing American flag lapel pins. That was the beginning.

Back then, anti-war demonstrators burned flags, more to piss off wingnuts than for any hatred or disregard for the flag.

The unspoken message back then was "the flag belongs to true Americans -- i.e. Republicans."

The Bush administration has brought it full circle. George W. Bush wrapping himself in the flag has given a new meaning to pig in a blanket.

6. Not at our house
We've got two small American flags in a planter box right next to our Kerry/Edwards sign.

9. Yes, I agree.
However, looking back at the Civil War, the most visible symbol of slavery and racism that survives to today is the rebel flag.

Sometimes, I wonder if the wingnuts are turning the American flag into a symbol of oppression that rational, sane people will hate a hundred years from now.

12. During our weekly war protest -
my mom carries a flag. This week three women approached us, they couldn't see our signs well from the direction they came from, they said they were nervous about coming up to us because we had a flag. They said they were afraid we were right wing nut jobs.

13. It has in fact become a symbol of right wing hyper-nationalism
"Keeping Up With The Joneses" has grown to include flag posting. Somehow plastering America with the flag will ward terrorists away, like those decorative designs the Dutch used to ward away evil spirits. You don't have flags all over everything you own, you must be a terrorist or want terrorists to win and need to move to Iraq. The flag is quickly morphing from a symbol that unites Americans under a common set of positive ideals into a new swastika.
