Global Warming & Super-Storms : Expect More

Global Warming May Spawn More Super-Storms
by Stephen Leahy

BROOKLIN, Canada - Hurricane Ivan, the incredibly powerful storm that killed at least 120 people in the Caribbean and southern United States, may be a harbinger of the Earth's hotter future, say experts. "As the world warms, we expect more and more intense tropical hurricanes and cyclones," said James McCarthy, a professor of biological oceanography at Harvard University.

Despite the recent destructive series of hurricanes and tornadoes, global warming is off the radar screen of the U.S. presidential election campaign.

Large parts of the world's oceans are approaching 27 degrees C or warmer during the summer, greatly increasing the odds of major storms, McCarthy told IPS.

When water reaches such temperatures, more of it evaporates, priming hurricane or cyclone formation. Once born, a hurricane needs only warm water to build and maintain its strength and intensity.

Expect More Storms, More Suffering
by James Morris, The Miami Herald

It's not our values that Mother Nature hates, it's our emissions. The head of the World Food Program says we better plan for more disasters---and climate change is to blame.

Global Warming May Spur Fiercer Hurricanes - Experts
By Christopher Doering

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As Hurricane Ivan and its powerful winds churned through the Gulf of Mexico, scientists told Congress on Wednesday that global warming could produce stronger and more destructive hurricanes in the future.

Global warming will increase the temperature of ocean water that fuels hurricanes, leading to stronger winds, heavier rains and larger storm surges, the researchers told the Senate Commerce Committee.

However, the increase in ocean temperatures is unlikely to boost the average number of Atlantic hurricanes that form each year, they said.

1. Severe weather & the resulting suffering gives the whores
stories to broadcast. Just think, if we got one level 4 hurricane a week, a couple of twisters, some drought & floods, they wouldn't have to do anything.

Oh wait -- they already don't do anything. Damn! I picked the wrong occupation!

2. Well one thing about it. The South is catching the blunt of it
And that is GOP country. They reap what they sow. They want to laugh at Global Warming and say it is all hype, well let them pay the Piper then. I feel very sorry for the Island people though and the normal liberally oriented people who also happen to live in the South.

4. speaking of Islands, Haiti lost more than 600 people!

<snip>

GONAIVES, Haiti - Bloated corpses and weeping relatives filled morgues in Haiti after Tropical Storm Jeanne left more than 600 people dead, another tragedy on this Caribbean island in a year marked by revolts, military interventions and deadly floods. The death toll was expected to rise.

Hardest hit was the northern city of Gonaives, where search crews continued to recover bodies carried away by the raging weekend floods or buried by mud or the ruins of their homes.

"I lost my kids and there's nothing I can do," said Jean Estimable, whose 2-year-old daughter was killed and another of his five children was missing and presumed dead.

"All I have is complete despair and the clothes I'm wearing," he said, pointing to a floral dress and ripped pants borrowed from a neighbor

3. Winds could approach 200 mph!!!!!
One of the articles on superhurricanes mentions that global warming may cause an additional increase in ocean temperatures of several degrees which could increase the force of the hurricanes to up to 200 mph. Since the force of the hurricane rises exponentially with the wind speed, these hurricanes could be many times more powerful than Cat 5.
