Any Vancouverites notice this about News 1130 AM?
This morning on Vancouver (BC) News 1130, they didn't say anything about the interview on Letterman. They only mentioned that Kerry had just been on Regis, that Kelly said he looked handsome and that he didn't dispute it. That was pretty much it. Afterwards the male announcer said that "some people say" that Kerry looks like Herman Munster. They've never refered to bush as a chimp, so I thought WTF?

And a few weeks ago, they said that the booing at the MTV awards was all for the Kerry sisters, even though as we all know, the audience also saw the bush twins in the Jumbotron at the time.

News 1130's owned by Rogers Telecommunications, but I thought they had some CNN affiliation, too. I don't remember them sounding so fox-like.

Anyone know if anything's up?

2. I moved from Vancouver
to the Island last year after things started getting a little more violent in my neigbourhood and the housing prices started going up. I'm a news junkie, and the radio on the Island sucks. Although I've just started to check out CBC on the road. (Mind you, if they keep doing things like interviewing bus drivers on the first day of school, I may just drop that station altogether.)

I miss the mainland a lot, but I love it here, too. It's a trade-off, and at either place I consider myself very lucky.

4. When you say "the island" are referring to Vancouver Island?
My wife and I thinking about moving up your way from Seattle, especially if Baghdad Bush wins this election. Are property prices better there than on the main land? I've been checking on "totalization" and Canadian citizenship. Probably a 50/50 chance we will do it. I've sailed throughout the islands for years and really enjoy your country.

5. While I joke that you should come up here...

and although I'm not in your shoes, all Americans with a DU mindset should stay at home, IMHO. The fewer of you in the states just means the more of them remain. I don't think that's a good idea.

Having said that, yeah, "The Island" is local, uh, parlance for Vancouver Island. In Vancouver proper we had a 775 sf condo. We sold that last year and bought a 2000 sf house in Courtenay for 25%-30% less.

Here are some more upsides:
Great arts community all over the island
Beautiful drive up the old highway from Parksville to Campbell River. (South to Victoria's probably nice too, I've just never driven that direction.)
    Light traffic compared to Vancouver.
As gay-tolerant as Vancouver from what I've seen.
Fishing, hunting, Mount Washington, a possible training ground for the 2010 Olympics happening in Vancouver.

Here are the downsides:
You HAVE to have a car, if not a truck.
There are no fresh-produce corner stores with really good prices. You have to go to the bigger supermarket chains and generally pay more.
It's very "white" here. I miss the cultural diversity of Vancouver. You want your Greek specialty food, or a Bollywood DVD? Forget it.
The natural surroundings are great, but how I miss English Bay.
You will be affected whenever there's a ferry strike (here, the Orwellian term is "job action")
Local city councils like to focus on silly details sometimes: "Let's ban all plastic grocery bags!" I guess there aren't many real problems in that case.

There's so much more, but I'm sure you'll find more information easily. If you decide to emigrate, definitely check us out. I can't guarantee that you won't get the occasional "look" for being from the US, but honestly it's only because of bush.

EDIT: BTW, love the cartoon.
