1. There is a concern that they will take fewer measures to save the lives

of organ donors. It would be more reassuring to potential donors if there weren't these ridiculous malpractice limits so the doctors will do their best to save each patient. Some potential donors have a separate paper they leave with relatives.

5. same here.
if i die, and there is something salvageable, i'm sure someone close to me will be there to make the decision, given i'm hopelessly gone or dead. no need to go advertising it.

9. This really is a baseless risk. Do you know any medical professionals?
Ask them about it. There is really no chance of this ever influencing a decision about you on the off chance that anyone making a decision even knows you are an organ donor. In the case of an emergancy the odds are they wont bother figuring that out until they have already saved your life.

Everyone should be an organ donor, and it doesnt much matter if you put it on your drivers liscense, the important thing is to register.

14. Really?
That spooks me. It would be an incredible ethical lapse and it would certainly be actionable and criminal. Even if a medical profesionals ethics were that far off that he could break the fundemental rule of medical care, he/she wouldnt want to open themselves up to suit and imprisonment.

16. I'll back you up on that ...
a student in my speech class gave a 7 minute presentation debunking the whole idea. People are afraid of everything these days!

4. Will donate whatever they can use. When my daughter died, we could
not donate much because she was too badly injured. But we were able to donate some bone and skin and her corneas at least, and one of the thoughts that gets me through the bad days is this:
One cornea went to a little boy, 7 years old, born blind. Had never seen his mom or dad, and now he can! The other went to a mom who became blind (not sure why...accident? diabetic retinopathy? anyhow...) she had never seen her children and now SHE can.
As a mother of two beautiful children whom she adored, I think that would make my daughter happy...it helps me, when I want to fall into one-woman, self-pity-party mode.

12. IMPORTANT if you want to be an organ donor
You must register to be donor, hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I about it, but I do know that the organ donor thing on your liscense doesnt really make that much of a differnce. You have to register yourself ahead of time.

13. Yes, and made sure to tell my wife
...and other family members that I absolutely without reservation or hesitation want to donate my organs. It's important to follow up the driver's license addendum and/or donor card by explaining to your closest family members what you want done with your organs if you die. Some hospitals will not go ahead with your request unless they get the OK from a close family member.

15. Anything I haven't used up myself can go to those who need it
What the heck--you can't take it with you. I've had a donor card since the program first began about 30 years ago. If I don't die of extreme old age and debilitation, maybe some good will come of my untimely demise.

As for the notion that someone might hasten my going, I much more greatly fear being kept alive indefinitely as a vegetable on a respirator. My husband and children both know my wishes -- but a piece of unfinished business it the medical power of attorney I should give my husband.

My husband and I have divergent views on these matters, but I have promised to honor his desires and trust he will honor mine.

18. Don't Let Anyone "Guilt" You In To It
Nobody should decide to become a donor because they were browbeaten into it. Everyone has the absolute right to decide what to do with their bodies, or what is to be done with their bodies once they are dead. The choice to be a donor or not is an extremely personal one, and an individual's choice needs to be respected, no matter what that choice is. Even though I would personally benefit from there being more donors, I am opposed to any mandatory donation scheme.

20. If dying of heart failure would you deny yourself a heart transplant?
maybe we should have a DNR or a DNT for drivers licenses for those who leave off the donor list, (do not transplant) and only have those who've listed themselves as donor's be able to receive transplants of course leaving children aways open as organ recipients

at that point! :)

And if * gets four more years, ooops, four more wars, they can have my donations sooner. ;)

Mine says they can harvest my corpse AFTER I die. I might need that second kidney while I'm still breathing, but after I die my cremated body won't need any of those things anyway.

26. Have checked no but left instructions with all my kin
Leave the decision to them as in........ I WANT TO LIVE and I don't care if they think I can never recover. What's the rush?

If I languish - and EVERYONE agrees there is no hope, then go ahead and farm me. If ONE PERSON objects, the whole deal is off.

I just get the feeling they (med professionals) are a little too ready with the forks and knives sometimes.
