some hitler youth, AKA ProtestWarrior, has begun leaving...
...their anti-Islam and pro-war posters taped to my lab/office door, much to the amusement of my grad students and I. The door is otherwise papered with anti-war posters and bumper stickers, including a prominent DU sticker. The ProtestWarrior posters have a short life, but we've yet to catch the young fascist in action. I have a couple of "altered" American flags hanging in my lab windows as well (a peace flag and a corporation nation flag) in response to the post-9/11 flag frenzy, which probably drives them nuts.

More adventures in higher education.... There's always one or two like this in every class, even at as liberal an institution as mine.

1. Are you attempting to indoctrinate your students?
You may be intimidating some students. I would be unhappy if one of my professers had nothing but political material on display and even more so if that material was one sided.

4. Are professors not allowed to have personal opinions, and are....
...they not allowed to express those opinions as long as nobody is getting hurt?

8. Damn, you sound like Lynne Cheney
Bias in education is fine as long as it's open. I teach both sides of every issue in the classroom, but outside the classroom, I can say what I want. Perioda end of quota. If students get "intimidated" they can join the military where they won't have to think for themselves.

If the poster was a carpenter, would you suggest that his co-workers are "intimidated" by Kerry stickers on his toolbox? Gimme a break. College students are there to toughen up, grow up, or drop out and live their lives as failures. I'm sick of being expected to parent these little shits, especially the Republican ones.

9. the political material is on my door, not in my lectures....
I'm a biologist, so my teaching has relatively little political content. Office doors are often used for more personal expressions.

13. It sounds like the students are using the door as a bulletin board
and the pro-Kerry opinions out-poll the pro-war opinions. What's wrong with that? Sounds like democracy and free speech in action.

...and chuckle about. Prior to this round of Protest Warrior posters, I'd only ever gotten one hand-written sign that said something like "too bad the first amendment applies to unpatriotic assholes."

3. um, that's what liberal is all about, yes? Protest?
(and it's "of my grad students and me". Object of the preposition "of" and all that. Hate to be a stickler, but those old English lessons die hard.)

6. yes, being liberal is all about...
... putting your propaganda on top of someone else's propaganda.

Why, Mario Cuomo himself does it every day - but if you catch him, he'll deny it.

12. Leave him a note.

"Dear Hitler Youth,

Thank you for your posters, however we feel we should remind you that this campus does not tolerate bigotry of any kind.... yada... yada... yada... Enclosed is an Enlistment form. If you are not a complete coward and hypocrite, you will fill this out and return it to your nearest recruitment office since the military in desperate need of fresh recruits.

Sincereley,
Your Name."

15. I was actually thinking about doing something along those lines....
Leaving an envelope marked "Dear Protest Warrior" taped to the door with an enlistment form in it and an invitation to act on his/her convictions.
