Democrats polish their positions in bid to regain House (6 core values)
By Andrea Stone, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — Faced with an uphill battle to win back the majority they lost a decade ago and worried that the public doesn't know where they stand, House Democrats Wednesday will unveil a platform of six "core values" they hope will give voters a reason to support them in November.

The New Partnership for America's Future is "our pledge to the American people addressing their aspirations," says House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California. She promises "a drumbeat" by House Democrats about their party's values on national security, prosperity, fairness, opportunity, community and accountability.

The statement of principles, designed to fit on a pocket card that candidates can carry with them, reiterates familiar Democratic positions. There are no new initiatives or specific legislation. Instead, the plan lays out goals such as creating 10 million new jobs, assuring health care for all children, making college tuition tax deductible and ending deficit spending.<snip>

But some promises, such as to "guarantee a prescription drug benefit under Medicare" and to "enact middle-class tax relief," may open Democrats to charges that Republicans already have acted. Democrats counter that the GOP has done more for HMOs and the wealthy than for seniors and average taxpayers.<snip>

1. Nothing about defense?
There should be. We need to push a sound policy on defense/national security issues.

2. There is nothing better for Defense than getting our financial house
in order. We spend more on interest on the debt than we do on National Defense and that figure is escalating drastically. The interest rates are going to continue to rise and that means less money for Defense and everything else America needs. Stop deficit spending and start paying off our debt or we are screwed as a Nation for anything worthy of Americans. Things like Health Care and Infrastructure maintenance, alternative energy investments, you name it. Without debt relief we will have no money for anything including Defense.

3. Well...
If we don't even talk about it and make some noise about it (defense and WOT) then don't be surprised when the party is seen as weak on the issue.

4. Where have you been these last couple of months
That is about all the Democrats talked about at the Convention and Kerry has been getting skewered by Swift boat scum LIARS ever since. Their excuse is Kerry made it an issue. We have heard almost nothing but Defense. It is time to talk about the real issues. How we can afford Defense and the proper role of America in maintaining our Defense. First most elections are about the incumbant and whether they are doing the job. There is no reason to replace an incumbant if people are happy with the job being done. We need to make people see that Bush* is not doing a good job and needs to be replaced. No one will really know how Kerry will handle Defense until he is in a position to do so. Let's educate the people as to why Bush* is not up to the job on Defense or anything else for that matter and Kerry will do just fine.

5. Granted
I would just like to see our House Reps get a little more sophisticated on the issue.

I have been right here. :)
