Fascism in the U.S. -Closer than we think?
In the book "The Anatomy of Fascism", I came across a stunning chapter. In it, the author(Robert O. Paxton) described the prime settings for a coup in a peaceful democracy in order for Fascism to take effect. Here they are:

Years of Stagnant Political Policies

Nation United under One Cause

Leadership Positions Altered

Extermination of any opposition

In the current climate of the United States, I can see the main ingredients of a revolution just beginning to be added to the pot. Sure this has been said since the beginning of the U.S.'s short history, but it seems now, more than ever, the climate is right for a storm to move in.

The Post-Cold War policies amongst our nation has been the same for almost 20 long years, and show no sign in changing. Our politicians have become plastic (no pun intended), The same issues cause the same fights every four years, and all we do is have different situations to try and solve the same problem. We are and have been stuck in years of stagnant political policies.

One thing that isn't stagnant is our nation at war. It always seems each president has to try his arm in battle to see if he can out kill the man that held the office before him. War is what built this nation and will be what tears it down. Remember when 911 happened? We were all united under one flag, all of us were yelling for revenge, and a majority of America looked up to President Bush as a Gallant leader with a halo of light constantly surrounding him. The current administration has warped 9/11 in a strange way: A way to get people to follow the current government mindlessly. This is very dangerous. If you get the nation together under one cause and all of these people follow a maniacal leader, there will be a revolution. On the other hand, when people start making noise(as what is happening now) the Government will think twice about their actions.

President Bush has the military, all he needs is the public in unity, and he could easily take the nation and alter into any shape he wants. The choice is his.

The office of the President of the United States can be a delicate, yet frightening office to hold. The president has many Executive orders he could enact at any time, which include martial law and total power. How long would this martial law and total power last under the current administration? They are constantly warning the civilians of terroists and have been using the emotion of fear in their favor for quite some time now, which would play in their favor in the case of total power.

The presidency of the US has been altered already in some aspects. The president has taken a perfectly legit war to 2 countries without congressional approval, Started up a string of beaurocracies, and has single handidly brought down the social structure of America.

Last talking point:Extermination of any opposition. The U.S. has had a leniancy policy towards opposition groups...until now. The current regime has tried it's hardest to suppress the Liberals and Moderates, in order to pursue their own way of policing. If you are a liberal, you should really be aware of your surroundings. The religious right has taken the nation by storm and hates anything that has a drop of a dime difference with it, which is quite sad.

With all of these factors in place, a change in government is coming soon. I'm not saying Kerry can change all of these, but he is the man to keep the nation from going under in the short term. 4 more years with president Bush is a catalyst awaiting to have a flame set to it. Please be smart with your votes this year, and if you are undecided, make sure to put some good research in.

Thanks and be safe

1. Facism gained its foothold with Ray-gun, and we've been
watching the slide down the slippery slope ever since, IMO.

2. We should not be looking for the traditional Nazi jack-boot Storm....
...troopers according to Mark Salotte in his recent piece on <snip>:

"Third Positionist" Fascism In The US: A Case Study Of Bill White
by Mark Salotte
THE THIRD POSITION IN NORTH AMERICA: GROWING DANGER OR OVERBLOWN HYPE (OR BOTH?) A CASE STUDY OF "KAISER BILL" WHITE

Background: the Third Position Internationally
Recently the growth of the political tendency known as the "third position" -- a fascist tradition with roots in the left-wing of the German Nazi Party under Otto and Gregor Strasser -- has been trumpeted loudly from all corners. A recent article in Playboy magazine (1) authored by a leading member of the Southern Poverty Law Center uses the concept to attempt to tie together such diverse political tendencies as Islamic fundamentalism, anti-abortion terrorism, neo-Nazism, Earth First!, and other hinted-at-but-not-named anarchist tendencies. For liberals such as the SPLC and the Anti-Defamation League, the concept of the fascist "third position" is precisely the necessary construct to justify an attack on the anarchist movement under the cover of "anti-racism."

3. Facist movements...
are definitely not 'left-wing'. Though Hitler was from the socialist party, his policies could be definied as right wing. Same with Stalin. While he may have started out as what people could consider leftist, as soon as he had power his policies were definitely right wing. Authoritarianism, ethnocentrism, xenophobia, warmongering, corporate welfare, bigotry, mass censorship, a false sense of morality and a total disregard for human rights definitely have their roots in right wing ideology.

5. I would say police state starts in 11 days, based on the "October Plan"
This is a blatant announcement of their intentions.

7. Oh my.
Specifically, the plan calls for "aggressive - even obvious - surveillance" techniques to be used on a short list of people suspected of being terrorist sympathizers, but who have not committed a crime. Other "persons of interest," including their family members, may also be brought in for questioning, one source said.

terrorist sympathizers=anyone who doesn't agree with this regime. "You're either with us or you're against us." :scared:

9. This site appears to bring a lot of the elements together....
...some of it makes sense other parts look like shear fantasy. Its focus is on the influence of big oil, 9-11 conspiracy and BushCo corruption, but it does appear to have a lot on fascism as it has taken hold here in the U.S. Looks like it could keep a person occupied for several days going from link to link:

In the" Poli Sci" Section there is a great propoganda film titled "Despotism "
The film seems to be prophetic.

11. Use these fascist charcteristics as a guide:
Defining Characteristics Of Fascism

By Dr. Lawrence Britt

1.Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as
a motivational tool by the government over the
masses.

2.Religion and Government are Intertwined -
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most
common religion in the nation as a tool to
manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and
terminology is common from government leaders, even
when the major tenets of the religion are
diametrically opposed to the government's policies
or actions.

3.Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist
regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic
mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other
paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are
flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

4.Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing
power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist
government, labor unions are either eliminated
entirely, or are severely suppressed.

5.Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under
fascist regimes, the police are given almost
limitless power to enforce laws. The people are
often willing to overlook police abuses and even
forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism.
There is often a national police force with
virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

6.Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in
fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times
elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against
or even assassination of opposition candidates, use
of legislation to control voting numbers or
political district boundaries, and manipulation of
the media. Fascist nations also typically use their
judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

7.Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes
almost always are governed by groups of friends and
associates who appoint each other to government
positions and use governmental power and authority
to protect their friends from accountability. It is
not uncommon in fascist regimes for national
resources and even treasures to be appropriated or
even outright stolen by government leaders.

8.Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and
business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are
the ones who put the government leaders into power,
creating a mutually beneficial business/government
relationship and power elite.

9.Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is
directly controlled by the government, but in other
cases, the media is indirectly controlled by
government regulation, or sympathetic media
spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially
in war time, is very common.

10. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist
nations tend to be almost exclusively
male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional
gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion
and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is
represented as the ultimate guardian of the family
institution.

11.Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a
Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a
unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate
a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or
religious minorities; liberals; communists;
socialists, terrorists, etc.

12.Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist
nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility
to higher education, and academia. It is not
uncommon for professors and other academics to be
censored or even arrested. Free expression in the
arts and letters is openly attacked.

13.Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are
widespread domestic problems, the military is given
a disproportionate amount of government funding, and
the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and
military service are glamorized.

14.Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights -
Because of fear of enemies and the need for
security, the people in fascist regimes are
persuaded that human rights can be ignored in
certain cases because of "need." The people tend to
look the other way or even approve of torture,
summary executions, assassinations, long
incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes
of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco
(Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin
American regimes. Britt found 14 defining
characteristics common to each:

12. fascism in a pin-striped suit is what parenti calls it
he laid it out pretty starkly in "Dirty Truths" (1995), and anyone who doesn't think we're on the verge is not paying attention.

13. The fascist American state arrived with the Coup of December 2000...
...but quite a bit of the legal/legislative groundwork was done during the administrations of Reagan, Bush I, and Clinton (GOP-controlled Congress and Judiciary).

Add in the Patriot Act and those provisions of Patriot Act II that have ALREADY been passed as riders on other bills, and the U. S. Constitution as we once knew it is dead as a doornail.
