Now, I still think Kerry is going to win. But he is facing the most lethal, adept, ruthless RW smear machine ever. They have complete control of the corporate media in ways that we don't even realize yet.
If this thing gets taken from Kerry - whether it is just stolen or he is smeared, or whatever. There is a silver lining ....
1. It will become clear early next year that Bush has lost Iraq. Anyone with any military sense sees this already. Lots of generals and other experience military types are already calling game over. About 9 months ago, several of them warned the Bush administration that they had about six months to get it under control or face defeat. Whatever Bush does now - draft, attack Iran to divert, let another terrorist attack happen, whatever ... it is going to provide only temporary relief. Fully 40% of the country has grave doubts about him, and it will only get worse. And while there are very few moderates or paleo-cons left in the Republican party, there is enough of them that when he loses Iraq - he will effectively lose at least 20% of his party.
2. It is becoming clear from the Plame/Fitzgerald investigation that the corporate media has been effectively co-opted by this administration and the RW echo chamber. This administration has set up people to exert undue influence in several major media outlets including ABC, Washington Post, The New York Times, Time etc. They had influence in the coverage that led up to the Iraq war, and they are unduly influencing the Presidential Election. Frankly, I am not hopeful Fitzgerald can bring this out into the daylight himself. But the combined efforts of the newly energized progressive media might.
Whatever happens. and I mean this, the only way we are going to take back our country is to keep fighting - especially the media. Even if Kerry wins, the neo-conservatives will try to hang Iraq around Kerry's neck and not Bush's. Jeb is waiting in the wings and believe me, Karl Rove will not go away. He has a grand plan to turn our country into a one-party state. W is just a means to an end.
Look at it this way. We are fighting against an administration that is significantly worse than Nixon's. We don't want to look back in 10 years and say "I should of fought that SOB". We need to fight him now, whatever the outcome ...
