Somewhat disturbing LTTE (re:draft)
In reference to your Aug. 30 article, "Floridians firmly oppose military draft": When, where and how was this poll taken? No one I have spoken to was asked his or her opinion.

If the draft was reinstated, all the young men who prefer not to go to school or get a job wouldn't be out on the streets causing trouble and committing criminal acts.

Bring back the draft.

Will this be the rationale for bringing back conscription? That young people need to learn a little discipline and patriotism? The point of view expressed by the writer here seems to suggest or imply that only working class young men, or men who cannot afford college should be subjected to the draft. I guess some people would get to stay home.

5. No this is a common point of view
and believe it or not has some merit in some very particular cases, there are some young men and women who would benefit from a stint in the armed forces. Now making a generalization and using this to justify a draft is a whole different matter

I know for a fact one young man who would benefit, as he needs the focus that the military would give him, Now if we could avoid the issue of having to serve in a combat zone...

That said, this is a common view, in particular with older people who may, or may not have draft age kids, who see a discipline problem across the society.

I can almost smell the age, and social group as well

2. Read:
All the kids whose parents are rich enough to send them to college won't have to worry about this.

All the poor kids who can't AFFORD to college and have turned to crime because they have no other options can go get their asses shot off in Iraq.

Bring back the draft, indeed.

You fucking chickenhawk SOB.

3. "all the young men who prefer not to go to school or get a job"
If that fuckstick thinks school or a job keeps you outta the draft, he's out of his mind.

Or he's a Bush.

4. Sounds like the writer is old
because in the 40s and 50s, it was common give kids who got into trouble a choice: jail or the Army. The idea was the Army would straighten them out. Of course, this writer also thinks that only poor people get into trouble.

I did not want to say this so explicitely, but this was a common belief all the way to 1973
