Well, Ms. ret5hd and I got up this morning, went to the farmers market and got produce, then hit the neighborhood streets going door to door with Kerry/Edwards signs and a hammer in hand.
We live in a working class neighborhood, but it IS texas, so it has been common for us to be received less than warmly. However, this morning we knocked on this one door and a guy younger than us (maybe 30 or so) answered.
Us: Hi. We are supporting John Kerry for president. Would you like a Kerry/Edwards sign for your yard?
Him: I'm not gonna vote for that fraud!
Me: You mean the one that actually went to viet-nam?
Him: He went over there with his video camera! (don't ask me, just reporting what was said)
Me: Well, President AWOL must have had a telephoto lens.
Him: If your guy gets elected the country will be ruined paying for everybodys healthcare! (notice how viet-nam was dropped)
Me: Would you like to compare the per capita amount of money spent on healthcare between the u.s. and canada?
Him: So you want this country to go socialist like canada?!
Us: Sounds good to us.
By this time we were halfway to the next house and he was following us out on the sidewalk. But this ended our discussion and he returned to his house.
At another house on the same block, a woman answered the door, saw our signs and said"Ohhhh, I'm sorry, you've knocked on the WRONG door."
Us: Thank you anyway. Have a nice day
Her: I haven't seen hardly any Bush signs out around here. Do you know where i can get some of them?
Us: (looking at each other in confusion) Nooooo...no, i can't think of where they'd be...noooo, uhuhh.
Her: Well, I'm gonna find out and get a whole truck load of them.
Us: Ooookay...have a good morning.
Then we saw a guy out clipping his hedges. We walked over, gave our pitch, and he started talking about how if *bush gets in, he doesn't know what will become of the country. We talked to him about 5 minutes, and he was informed about BBV, Kerry's record, the current administrations record, and was very impressed with the breadth of his knowledge.
Another woman, a social worker, talked to us about 5 minutes or so about the republican agenda in the social areas, again very well informed, and stated she was leaving the country for england if *bush is reelected.
I guess the point of this rambling story is that every *bush supporter we ran across could only, at best, spout off media generated propaganda, and at worst, were so dense that they would ask somebody carrying Kerry/Edwards signs where to find *bush/cheney signs.
And almost every Kerry supporter was well informed and articulate.
All in all, it was a good morning.
