The Parlock Family: News Whores For The GOP
From a news report about a Bush appearance on the 4th of July:

http://www.herald-dispatch.com/2004/July/05/LNspot.htm

The Phil Parlock family of Barboursville -- father, mother and 10 children -- likewise made the trip as a family. Rachel, 13, said it was the second time she had seen Bush.

"It was really good that we got the president on the 4th of July," she said.

Her older sister, Pam, 22, said she has seen Bush so many times she has lost count.

"You hope to get closer each time. Hopefully someday we’ll get a handshake," she said.

Pam Parlock said she belongs to the Marshall Young Republicans, and she could have sat with them, but she wanted to be with her family, even if it cost her the handshake. She is a member of the West Virginia Army National Guard and was called to duty last year. The 1257th Transportation Co., to which she belongs, spent some time at West Point, but it never went overseas, she said.

Alex Parlock, 11, said he shook Bush’s hand four years ago during a campaign visit at Harris Riverfront Park in Huntington. Alex said he was sitting on his father’s shoulders and wearing a Bush mask when then-candidate Bush saw him and shook his hand.

11. You might be interested in the thread

that I started at 4 am yesterday for more details of Parlock's publicity-grabbing. Notice how one of the stories tells of one of his sons sitting on his shoulders wearing a Bush* mask at a rally. Bush* came over and shook his hand. He does know how to get attention using his kids as props, doesn't he?

Rezmutt then turned up the real dirt on Lexis-Nexus -- the info about 2000 and 1996, when Parlock also claimed that mean Dems stole his GOP signs at Dem rallies. Kids were with him at those rallies, too.

2. Thank God for the internet
This is only getting out because of the internet. If we had to rely on mainstream journalists, we would never know the truth.

5. Also at that rally
Were a couple who wore t-shirts unflattering to Bush and were ARRESTED.

T-shirt suit targets Secret Service

Charleston, WV, Sep. 14 (UPI) -- The American Civil Liberties Union filed suit in Charleston, W.Va., Tuesday on behalf of a couple arrested for wearing anti-Bush T-shirts at a Bush rally.

The ACLU said the suit targets the Secret Service and Greg Jenkins, deputy assistant to the president and director of White House advance.

The man and wife were arrested during a July 4th appearance by President Bush on the steps of the state Capitol.

Jeff Rank, a registered Republican, and his wife Nicole said they did not intend to disrupt the president's visit, the ACLU said.

The Ranks obtained tickets to the event but drew attention when they removed their outer garments to display T-shirts bearing the international "no" symbol (a circle with a diagonal line across it) superimposed over the word "Bush."

The charges against the Ranks were dismissed in court and city officials publicly apologized for the arrest. The officials said local law enforcement was acting at the request of Secret Service.

7. Letter I got back from Union Leader paper about Mr. Purlock:
We've advised AP that you and other folks have e-mailed us with questions about the Parlock incident. If the wire service wasn't double-checking before, they are now. If the incident appears to be self-inflicted, AP will no doubt file a followup story or a correction, which we would run on our Web site.

8. Will, whythehell haven't you posted your article here yet?
http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/091804X.shtml

Take a long look at the young man in the gray shirt, and then take another look at the alleged union guy who tore up the sign. Am I the only one who sees a striking resemblance?

It appears we have a clever fellow here who has convinced the same Charleston newspaper three different times that he was victimized by Democrats at rallies. He does not seem to have any problem with involving his own children in the game, and may have even gone so far as to have one of his sons play the role of 'Democrat Attacker.'

This could all be a series of strange coincidences. Parlock could simply be an unlucky guy who always seems to be around when Democrats do something wretched, who took abuse in 1996, 2000 and 2004 for supporting Republicans, who happened to have the same newspaper on hand to report his story each time, and who also happened to be on the scene of a shooting incident that made Democrats look like frightening would-be assassins.

This could be a series of coincidences, but someone should take a long look at this fellow regardless. Manufacturing a few sign-ripping incidents isn't a terribly big deal. But he appears to be hell-bent on making Democrats look like thugs, and there has been a shooting incident involving him on top of everything else. The media, which may well have been repeatedly scammed by Parlock, might want to do some further checking.

Author's note: The manner in which this story came to light is a lesson in modern journalism. The mainstream fellows simply reported the Parlock perspective, but it was an intrepid band of online newshounds - bloggers Rising Hegemon and Atrios, who picked up on the work of one Rezmutt, member of the forums at DemocraticUnderground.com - who pieced together the strange coincidences surrounding these Parlock incidents. Once upon a time, stories like this would get missed. The internet has created a whole new phenomenon. If the mainstream media wants to avoid being embarrassed, they might want to think about paying attention to this brave new world of investigative journalism.

Luckily, this time there were no opposition supporters from his family to interrupt.
