My kid rocks
My 5th grader came home today from a political debate that erupted in her English class. Seems they were doing one of those interminable "all about me" projects and another kid had a pic of bush in his "dislike" section. Having found a kindred spirit, my daughter and her classmate fended off the class princess and a set of freepers-in-training, maybe changing a couple of minds in the process because THEY HAD THE FACTS. My daughter (blushingly proud mom here) quoted the 8/6/2001 PDB, and called bush out as AWOL. The freepettes had nothing but the faux talking points they'd been spoon-fed. Surprisingly, these are easier to explode with 10-year-olds.

I commend the teacher for staying neutral and allowing the debate to proceed civilly, keeping the kids on topic.

As a reward, I'm letting my little activist join DU, which she's been dying to do for months. Not as if she's never heard the language before! Watch for her (OK to call her out on spelling).

yeah, my kid rocks.

4. We need to start early with our kids
My son who is 7 and autistic has picked up on my W is evil and send him back to Crawford Texas. LOL

But seriously - we all need to volunteer to do some civics duty in our kids' classrooms...

5. my college student kids rock!
I was talking about clarity and I used bush as an example, saying that whatever you thought of the message, he was still being perceived as "clear." As soon I said the word "Bush" the class started laughing and looking at each other. I think they view him as a buffoon.

6. That's great
I've got a nine-year-old who told me today he converted two "Bush kids". He knows the facts too--hit 'em with the deficit, voter fraud in FL, etc.

"They didn't know what to say". (tee hee)

7. Very Cool!
I sure as hell hope we win in November.

But if we do not....

I urge every kid 10-17 to read

"Light One Candle"

by Solly Ganor.

He was 11 when the Nazis took over his country (Lithuania) and he ended up in Dachau on a death march after stints in the killing fields.

It is not pretty,

but it COULD happen here if we lose in November.

So kids need to be prepared....

Love

9. Thanks
My company publishes an edition of that. I'll leave it lying around (the only sure way to get her to read anything).

11. My 8th grader fights the good fight with RWs everday at school
We live in rural/suburbia and it is crowded with Righties so my son gets into it good almost everyday at school. He has a "Students for Kerry" pin on his backpack.

Everyday after school he listens to Air America (Rhandi Rhodes) on tne Net and reads a lot of political stuff so he is well informed and blows away the typical 8th grade RW argument (e.g., Kerry cut off arms and legs in Vietnam). I mean, some of these RW kids are as dumb as their parents!

He looks at DU when I do but I still think there is a little too much use of the F word and such here to let him loose on DU.
