Republicans say claim is ‘wild idea’ If the United States continues on its path of foreign policy, a military draft will be inevitable, according to Ohio Congressman Ted Strickland.
Strickland, a Lisbon Democrat who has been working in Appalachian Ohio for the Kerry-Edwards campaign, said the stress Iraq is putting on the military will leave the U.S. no option but to institute a draft.
“We are involved in a war that I am convinced will require us to impose a military draft if we continue our current policies,” Strickland said after a John Edwards rally in Portsmouth on Thursday. “Every parent of a child in this country should understand that we are pursuing a policy in Iraq with no plan

Kevin Madden, spokesman for the Bush-Cheney campaign, says the administration has no intentions of imposing a draft.
“The president believes the U.S. can and will prevail in Iraq. It’s transformation from a brutal dictatorship to a democracy is vital to our nation’s short-term and long-term security interests,” Madden said. “Those who conjure up wild ideas about a military draft are peddling false and pessimistic viewpoints that are not shared by the majority of the American public.”
