Here is the text of an email I wrote to a local talkshow host Stacy Taylor. I messed up the "Operation..." part but you get the drift.
Stacy,
So as the reasons for occupying Iraq have changed, due to political expediency, an issue still bothers me regarding the current reason(excuse if you will) for being there. That would be "Operation Iraqi Liberation". Give me a break.
I was totally against this Iraq adventure. My position was, and is, that in response to 9/11 the USA should have, with the world helping, hunted down Osama, rebuilt Afghanistan as an example(although I am not big on "nation building"), and secured our borders and ports. Instead we have a Bush's Vietnam.
Now for the main flaw toward "liberating" Iraq, as I see it. As you know, Iraq is made up of varied ethnic, tribal, secular, and religious groups that don't get along with each other and that fact has been engrained for ten's of thousands of years. Why on God's green earth did the American public buy into the notion that the USA could march in there and the Iraqi people would embrace our 200 year old experiment we call democracy? We are talking about 1000's of years of varied cultures steeped in certain beliefs and now they are just supposed to due an about face and give that up for the "American Way"? Does Mr. and Mrs. Joe America think these people are going to drop thier traditions to embrace our way of life because we roll in the tanks and troops? And when they don't then King George proclaims that they, "Hate our freedoms"? WTF?
This is insanity to me Stacy. I have to come to the conclusion that, since not much debate has taken place regarding my observation, the public at large is "dumbed down" quite a bit. Hence Bush pulling 50% in the polls.
Good day, Ted from Encinitas
