2. Just mention WMD's to the hawks. That'll really get 'em going
Edited on Fri Sep-17-04 12:19 AM by bluestateguy
It's like rubbing salt on a wound. Really makes them mad. I even got rebuked on one of my course evaluations this summer from a right wing student who "did not appreciate (my) comments on WMD's".

HA! HA! We were right!!!

3. If Kerry would just say
"I can see now that this war was a big mistake"

I think he would be 20 points up in the polls and his base would be enthusiastic and happy. I wish he would see that this is the way to WIN. People don't want to fight in Iraq. They want the troops to come home. Kerry should say that if he is inaugurated on Jan 20, that the troops will be coming home on Jan 21.

6. He cannot...the ensuing Civil war will be worse than what we have done.
He needs to bring in foreign troops - GUARANDAMNTEE it he will - to stabilize, and possibly separate the country. He is smart enough to accomplish this goal.

11. Suuni's and Shia's detest each other
that's why we placed a strongman with our weapons there - Saddam. They are like the Protestants and the Catholics in Elizabeth's time.

They can be separated into nations or put under a strongman yet again.

13. Is it a good idea to separate
people by religion? I don't know-just asking it seems really weird to me. I mean here in the US we fight but we do have lots of religions going on and they all do OK. It is really sad if the country has to be separated by religion. Sorry I hadn't realized that was what you meant by separating them--thanks for explaining it to me.

14. It's Called 'Partitioning' !!!
Basically, before the British came, the area known now as Iraq was made up of at least three tribal regions. The British made up the current borders which have only been enforced by, well... force.

Some think that the only solution is to give each of the major 'tribes' there own partion. Sunni, Shiite, and Kurd.

I think that's about right.

If he said that, the flip-flop issue would be thrust upon him. I see what you're saying though, he would have to word it in a safe way. He should emphasize getting the troops home soon though.

18. I think so too
A lot of Americans initially supported the war and have reconsidered, given the facts. I must admit that even I, despite my objections, actually believed that it was going to be over quickly and we were going to be greeted with flowers. Ok, stupid me. But hey, many Senators and Representatives believed it too.

Kerry has utterly destroyed my faith in the Democratic Party. NO anti-war sentiment was permitted at the Democratic National Convention. NONE! Anti-war t-shirts were prohibited. Medea Benjamin was evicted. One of the founders of Code Pink was evicted from the floor of the DNC! Does this sound like a Twilight Zone episode?

Or did you simply, and nearly automatically, protest against something that's turned out poorly. Because I rather suspect the public at large believes the latter.

Unfortunately it doesn't address the underlying issue -- the issue which likely led Mr. and Mrs. Smith to vote Republican, because they thought that was the best way to support their son.

17. I'm somewhat confused.
First, we were attacked in Korea, not vice-versa, so why you brought it up as being somehow germane to Iraq is a mystery to me.

Second, what does believing "rose petal claptrap" have to do with how the protesters are viewed by mainstream America? It's as if we're typing in different languages.

I am a liberal peacenik bleeding heart type. Yet: Gulf War I ... didn't hear a peep outta me. Invasion of Afganistan... again, I said nuffink. This one reeked to high heaven. I never thought they made the connection clear about the WMDs and it turns out they DIDN'T! Neener neener neener!

Note: These are the only wars I've been alive for. So, can't speak about any other.

edited for clarity.

26. Then you aren't a liberal peacenik bleeding heart type.
At least not in my book. I was for Gulf War I (although now I have second thoughts), and Afghanistan as well. I also thought Gulf War II was stupid and immoral.

Some people really were "right" in protesting Gulf War II. And some people were just protesting, and would protest almost any time the U.S. becomes involved in armed conflict. There's a huge difference, and the public knows this.

31. True,
but the protests for Gulf War I were nowhere near the size of the protests before this Iraq war.

I protested, and told everyone I know the administration was lying about WMDs, we weren't going to be greeted as liberators and it would end up being a quagmire.I even told the journalists who asked why I was protesting.

The media may want to revise history, but most of the protestors I talked to were wary of this war for the same reasons I was. We never had a plan to get out, just some stupid idea that we would be greeted with flowers.

And Kerry has to be included in that lot - if he'd known Bush was
lying, he still would have supported the war. Sheesh!

I still can't believe he said that.

35. Being wrong
I was willing to take the word of Colin Powell (along with several Democrats) there were WMD, but suspected the occupation would be a horrible mess. A friend at work was anti-war no matter what. In the end her instincts were right. Iraq surpasses Vietnam as a mess without WMD (or so few they were negligible) while two wild cards are NOW actively and openly engaged in developing weapons (after being threatened by the current occupant of the Whitehouse).

In many ways this mess pales the Cold War.

36. Yep. Funny thing is,
I still seem to be wrong. For example, I heard a snip of a * speech this morning on NPR; he said something like "And the world is so much safer/better off with Saddam in jail than free to ....." And the crowd cheered wildly. My first thought,

"And the world would be so much safer with GWB Inc. safely behind bars...."

Am I wrong again?
