Why Bush's TANG service matters

It seems to me like the White House's primary defense against the Texas Air National Guard story isn't so much "he was there" as "it doesn't matter if he was there or not". This does stand to diffuse the issue a bit if we don't establish why this is important.

This is important because it is another data point in the endless string of incompetence that makes up George W. Bush's adult life. You can connect the drunken, coke snorting frat boy at Yale, to the "questionable circumstances" that led to his dismissal from TANG, to his failed business ventures, to his failed governorship, all the way to his presidency: complete failures all.

If this story is to have a maximum effect, it needs to be presented as yet another point, not necessarily as the centerpiece of the argument.
