They despise anything not in lockstep with their constricted views.

Who are you gonna believe, a bunch of hardcore rightwingers who hate anything with the 'L' word attached, or people who believe what you believe.

And I say that because if you're reading this review, likely you're curious.

DU is a bustling community. Original articles, activism, and common goals make it a fun and addictive site.

The so-called 'freepers' (denizens of Bush suckup site Free Republic) take DU way too seriously. They like to call DUers 'psychos' and 'loonies'. I could say the same about them, but why get into some silly arguement. DU is a message board with a lot of people posting. Very high membership. With all of those people posting, you're bound to run into many differing opinions. We aren't making nuclear bombs here or figuring out the meaning of life. We communicate. Simple as that. That the 'freepers' take this all so seriously shows that they perhaps need to step outside and breathe a little fresh air once in a while.

If you like politics, if you like ideas, if you like to share knowledge and get a feel for what is going on in the world, and if you just like a fun community, DU is the place. Now that doesn't sound like the ravings of a 'psycho', does it?

Yes, it's a website/message board/blog devoted to the absolute worship of George W. Bush. Well, it is now.

Here's what the founder said once about our current President:

So, it doesn't matter if he snorted coke as a youth? It was a long time ago, a youthful in-discretion? Kinda like people who frequented sneakeasies during prohibition? Kind of a cute story, eh? ... This was written on 08/20/1999. By today's FR standards (where badmouthing Bush is verboten) he would have to ban himself. Nice, huh?

Freak Republic is scary. It is dangerous. If you've ever felt revolted reading Ann Coulter, this is a living, breathing 24/7 example of scary, facist and just plain dumb goosestepping rhetoric. You wonder if these people are serious, or just trying to be utterly ridiculous. Frightening to think there are people this screwed up walking amongst us humans.

Oh, and did I mention the layout of this site is horrible? It's a nightmare to navigate this stupid site!

Unlike some forums (DU), FR actually allows dissenting views. Always on top of current events and politics. Great site.

I was told about this site by a friend who is a wealthy (and very well-known) Democratic supporter. He used the site for less than a month and was banned (he did not tell them his real identity, but he shared enough about his circumstances and experiences for them to know that he was well-off and the rank and file resented very much the fact that he had money. They attacked constantly because it was obvious he was upper-class and they did not like it one bit).

Several other stalwart Democrats that I have met on-line have the distinction of being banned from the site, one is an African American woman who was a delegate to the recent Democratic convention (tombstoned for defending a poster who was unpopular), another a disabled Vietnam vet who was recently "tombstoned": for complaining about his treatment by "peace activists" when he returned from the Vietnam war. This is hands down the most paranoid site on the web. You cannot start a thread until you have proven yourself by amassing an unspecified number of posts, and if you post here you will constantly be attacked as a troll from people on both the right and left. There is obviously a huge divide within the Democratic party and the old school McGovernite types are at constant odds with the DLC Clinton types.

Take heed of the warnings, but it is fun to spend some time at the site. I am a long-time member, mostly because I am very interested in the future of the Democratic Party. I am a DLC Democrat myself and I see a future where we split off from the rather embarrassing left (who will eventually go Green or Socialist). I am actively working toward this future by encouraging any DLC Democrats to join the site and fight for our positions. I have been responsible for bringing many Democratic NRA members to the site and I am very proud of that. DLC Democrats, I beg you to join and help me to reform this site. It is very necessary that we get rid of the "lefties" who are weighing down the party and causing us to lose elections. I beg you to come to the democraticunderground and help me reform our party and the world.

Nice alternate reality there. When was the last time that the Democratic Party ran on any "lefty" positions? I would say that the DLC is doing a damn fine job of losing elections all on its own. And I've love to see how well they'd do if ALL the "lefties" deserted the party for good.

DU is a great community, despite what some people have written here. DU isn't a "left wing hate site" as one reviewer and current member (I found out) posted. DU is a site for patriotic Americans who are deeply concerned about the direction their country is headed. Yes, there are some posters on DU who I do not always agree with and whose tone I find offensive at times, but after all, that's what free speech is all about. If there is a 'thread' I'm not comfortable with venturing into, I am free to skip it.

One thing that's really been inspiring to me is how the people of DU come together in times of need and personal crises. There have been instances where members have posted about family or friends who are sick and are in need of prayers or comfort. Recently, one of our long-time members sadly lost her husband in an accident. I was so inspired how DU came together and started a collection for the family.
