Could be hurricane force winds as far inland as Atlanta
Edited on Wed Sep-15-04 03:28 PM by kayell
prediction for Ivan from Accuweather. Between 15 to 30 inches total rainfall in the southern Appalachians when Ivan get stuck up in that area as a trop depression. "could cause floods of biblical proportions"

Stay safe all coasties, but stay safe for the rest of us in the SE too. I'm making preparations in case we're without power for a bit, and being very, very glad I'm on high ground.

1. Here in Mobile, AL
I've got mom's house boarded up, and mine too. Looks like this will be worse than Frederick or Camille affected us, anyway. I'm so tired from working harder than usual for the last three days, I'll be happy for the rest. Truth is though, if you survive, which most do, the worst part is doing without power for days, in 90 degree heat. Now that'll kill you.

Ouch!

5. My father in Florida has been without power since
the morning of September 3, and doesn't expect it back until Friday or Saturday, this week. Everything in that house is electric, so he's been living on pastries and fruit, plus whatever he can find in the way of fast food (and most of those joints are undergoing repairs). He's old enough not to miss the AC too much, but it's been pretty tough on him doing without TV and a stove. A neighbor supplied him with generator power for the freezer, but he can't cook anything that's in it!

I knew there were good reasons to move to New Mexico instead of some beach front paradise down south! All we have to contend with here is fire.

I hope your time without power is not as long, and with only one hurricane in the area instead of two, it probably won't be.

in the Appalachians! Would anyone like to help me start building an ark? :-(

Flood watch for my area was issued this afternoon, effective 8 pm Thursday through 8 pm Saturday.

6. I'm in the southern Appalachians.
We got over 15-inches of rain from Frances (my rain gage over-flowed). I live on the southeast side of a mountain and will be on the "dirty" side of Ivan. The lifting will wring a lot of rain out of this storm. The winds are forecast to be higher up here than they were with Frances.

However, I am much more worried about those at ground zero along the Gulf coast. I talked with a cousin who lives in Saraland (Mobile) in a house built on pilings over a swamp. She is going to ride it out. I fear for her life. Maybe they have forcefully evacuated her. Maybe she got smart and fled.
