Iraq Group Says Kills Two Italian Hostages -Web(2 Italian women)

DUBAI (Reuters) - An Islamist group in Iraq (news - web sites) has said it killed two female Italian hostages in a statement posted on an Internet site not often used by Iraqi militants.

The group, calling itself the Jihad Organization, said it had killed the women after Italy did not heed its call to withdraw its forces from Iraq. A group with a similar name, the Islamic Jihad Organization, said on September 12 that it would kill the hostages in 24 hours if Italian troops did not leave Iraq.

1. Oh nooo!
Not "le due Simone."

Since about 85% of Italians were against the Iraq war and Berlusconi's involvment in it, you can bet there will be some noise to be made. I'll be checking out a few online editions of Italian newspapers.

2. English al jazeera's servers have been overwhelmed all afternoon....
Seems there must be many other than regional Arabs looking for more complete info from Al Jazeera....?

I hope this is not true. These women were from a group that opposed the war. They appeared to be targeted specifically.

4. That's why they were targeted
I do believe that the group who captured them is out to make the war last longer and expand.

3. As reported in La Repubblica
For those who can read Italian (www.repubblica.it) front page news:

Un gruppo islamico ha annunciato l'uccisione di Simona Pari e Simona Torretta. Firmato da "Organizzazione Jihad", l'annuncio dice che le due donne sono state uccise perché il governo italiano non ha accolto la richiesta di ritirare le truppe dall'Iraq.

My translation:

An Islamic group has announced the execution of Simona Pari and Simona Torretta. Signed by "Jihad Organization", the announcement states that the two women were killed because the Italian government did not act on the request to recall its troops from Iraq.

7. Shades of Afghanistan

These are exactly the same tactics used by Islamic guerrillas in Afghanistan to cripple, and ultimately defeat, the Soviet occupation. The only difference is that now they're being turned against an American occupation rather than a Soviet one. Against the Soviets, we were told that these were the tactics of "brave religious freedom fighters" fighting against "godless communism". But now, against the US, they're the tactics of "barbaric Islamist insurgents" fighting against "the forces of freedom". Same murders, same brutality, same ideology, but magically the Soviet-era sympathies from the RW have all gone down the memory hole. Imagine that :eyes:

8. How did le due Simone and their aide get transferred to the Jihad
Organization? There is an issue of who initially took them into custody, and it isn't necessarily an islamic group.
