Frustrated in the work place

Well.

This is my first topic post. I'm a longtime lurker. I've just fucking had it.

Let me preface this post by saying that I (1) work in a very conservative industry, surrounded by numerous well-educated conservatives and (2) have never openly discussed politics in the workplace.

I had to listen to a Repub co-worker complain about hearing the political views of musicians (Mellancamp, Dave Matthews) and actors (Tim Robbins) and then getting pissed at them...and busted out with, "Why don't they just shut up?"

Me -- "You know, we've elected tons of actors and athletes to national elected offices --- President, Senators, House of Reps. We, as a society, vote them to office. What's the big deal?"

Repub -- "Yeah, but Ronnie wasn't stupid."

Me-- "So the other elected ones were? Or just the musicians? We elected 'Gopher' and a marginal college QB -- JC Watts -- to Congress."

Repub -- "Yeah, but Watts went to college. He got a degree."

Me -- "Are you sure he graduated? And he didn't go to college, he went to Oklahoma during Switzer's tenure. Think he actually went to class?"

ReThug -- "He must have...."



I was thisfuckingclose to losing it and insulting him beyond belief. I'm still damn-near shaking inside. I so fucking pissed off right now.

many conservatives are simply unable to have rational thought. They live in their own little world, bounded by fear of anything different from their own thoughts and prejudices.

if they don't like, don't listen, watch, or buy. If the artist remains popular and keeps selling, then that means all is good and what the artist said has value.

first to sue even though they all hate trial lawyers. I work from home mostly but when i do go into the office it's mostly repubs. Whenever they attempt their good natured ribbing (it's not really good natured) i either stare blankly at them or when they tell how swell Iraq is going i tell them...Oh i'll make sure to pass that along to my nephew in baghdad, seems the troops haven't gotten word about how wonderful things are. Usually that shuts them up quick because not a one of the 27 people that use that office have a kid in the military, mostly college kids that intern in the summer.

I'm in Mississippi & like you, I'm surrounded by them & it sucks.

Take solace in knowing the fact that you are on the side of the good guys, the people who want to make things better. If Mr. bush (manages to pull this election out of his ass) the next four years are going to be hell with the possibilities of numerous investigations & the ongoing problem of Iraq - he's poised to fuck-up big time & you get to watch the idiots you work with squirm. You won't rub their faces in it, but they'll know you were right before it's all done.

A funny aside for you to let you know you're not the only one...

Today the guy across the cube wall from me remarked that today was the first day of fall and I asked him if the equinox was yesterday or today, he actually said to me, "I don't know anything about that satanic stuff..." I didn't know what to say. This guy has a degree in engineering from a state university, too - but a talibornagain to the core.

KNOW you are right in what you believe & you'll be able to laugh these jackasses off, trust me.
