HISTORY : Question about Dictatorships
Do dictators generally transfer power sucessfully?

How likely would it have been that Saddam could have actually transfered power to one of his sons?

1. the only successful dictatorship-dynasty transition
in modern times is North Korea's Kim Il Sung tranferring to Kin Jong Il.

Unless I am mistaken the odds are usually weighed heavier towards "killed by military advisors" or "banished".

Both the Spanish (Franco) and Portuguese (Salazar) dictatorships dies with their figureheads.

2. It seems to me ...
that the Bushies discarded the arguement that we had to go to Iraq b/c Saddam's sons were going to take over rather quickly. I think even they knew it didn't really fly.

5. Actually Salazar's regime outlived him in Portugal
My memory is a little hazy but I think he was succeeded by Caetano (sp?) for a few years before the 1974 revolution brought democracy.

6. Don't forget the Duvaliers
Baby "Doc" ruled Haiti from 1971 until 1986.

3. Assad just died in Syria
ad his son took over. I don't know if you'd call a king a dictator, I guess so, but the king of Jordan died recently and his son took over.

4. Why didn't we just wait until Saddam died...?
Seems like a better point to try to institute democracy...Doesn't seem like Uday or Quasay had the same meddle as the Saddam...
