Deryk Schlessinger enlisted in the Army Branch of the United States Military on Tuesday, September 21, 2004. He qualified for Special Forces and HALO training and will begin service with the next scheduled Special Forces Training Class in January of 2005.

Until just a couple years ago, if you wanted to be a snake-eater you had to join in some other MOS--infantry was the preferred one--work yourself up to the rank of sergeant then apply for Special Forces Assessment and Selection. There the cadre decided who should go to the Special Forces Qualification Course.

Now you can join the army and go straight into SFAS after basic.

By the time he gets all the way through JFK Special Warfare Center and School, John Kerry will have shut down the war in Iraq and caught Osama in the classic manner (tracking his finances, like every other terrorist that's ever been caught has been caught), and he won't have to go to these two wars.

Let's see...Assuming Deryk makes it through basic training, he must then endure airborne school (where his status as the son of a celebrity will be used by Sergeant Airborne as the basis for lotsa abuse, especially if Doktor Laura pisses him off), Special Forces Assessment and Selection, three other courses for direct-accession SF trainees so they'll know how to fight as infantrymen, the Special Forces Qualification Course and Special Forces Language Course.

Yes, my friends, there are literally hundreds of opportunities for Private Schlessinger to be diverted from Special Forces training to learn how to (insert visual of hand flipping hamburgers in a chow hall in the Second Infantry Division in Korea...).
