A brave new TV series needs, deserves our support: WB's "JACK & BOBBY"
The WB network has taken a real risk, airing "Jack & Bobby," a smart new family drama about a single mother (who smokes a lot of pot) and her two boys, one of whom will become President in 2040 (we see the future in documentary-type scenes). The creators include a "West Wing" veteran, and a former Clinton staffer who based the concept in part on conversations with Bill Clinton about his childhood. As is evident from the title, there are echoes of the Kennedys. The series is about greatness. It should interest political junkies; the boys are kid-friendly characters. It is set in the present day, and this family wears Kerry buttons.

The series airs on Sunday nights at 9 Eastern. The pilot and one episode have already aired. Here is the WB link; click on "Jack & Bobby" to the left for more information about the program, and a link to a message board (I understand some freeper-types object to this show, other viewers are having a hard time "getting it"):

1. I made a point of recording the first one, because it sounded possibly
to be a good show. Haven't really watched it yet, though. :)

Missed the second one, dadratit...... did you see it?

Thanks for posting this--need to remember to record the next episode.... on Sunday, is it?

2. Next episode will be Sunday --
I must confess I don't have access to U.S. TV just now, and have not seen the show myself (someone's taping for me). I have this info because someone I know well is involved in the tv industry, knows my interest in politics, and has talked with me quite a bit about "J&B." Another DUer posted after the last show about the on-screen Kerry buttons and signs, and was very positive about the episode.

5. Thanks for the insider info! ^_^
Where is it you live, if you don't mind me being nosy? :)

I haven't seen any other mention of this on DU..... was it on this forum? I'd like to read the thread, if you remember where it was.

I sure hope they repeat the second episode! I have the next one programed in already, because I wanted to be sure not to miss it.

I've been surprised how well WB seems to be doing with some of their own shows. I liked Gilmore Girls the first couple of seasons, and I've become addicted to Everwood.... maybe mostly because I live in Colorado. :) Although it is filmed in Utah..... ~~guffaw~~

The only other show I actually watch is Judging Amy, and they have some very good issues on that.

Thanks again for bringing this up!

Also, I think WB may repeat episodes during the week, giving them more than the Sunday night airing, so you might check a schedule.

(We've been pretty much based in the UK for a while -- employment related -- but are frequently in the U.S., and will be returning full-time soon.)

13. Thanks for the link...... good discussion about it.
I think you were thinking about the very first episode.... I believe it was first aired on a Thursday night. Then the pilot was repeated on Sunday, and the suceeding episodes will be on Sunday. I really wished you had been correct about that, because I would still have some hope of retrieving that second episode. ^_^ But, I looked through the whole schedule to make sure....... no sign of it. Drat! :)

But, at least you will be up to date with it when you return stateside. :hi:

Thanks again for the reminder!

3. This May Seem Stupid
But the title of this show irritates me. It's like naming a show "Bill and Hillary", but it's not about the Clintons, or "Dumb and Dumber", but it's not about Bush Sr. and Dubya.

17. "In an era when political parties are more divided than ever,
Jack and Bobby offers a look at a leader who truly unifies."

I really liked that quote from your link. Now I'm even more interested in watching it -- thanks for posting the link.

8. how are the ratings?
I am not home on Sunday evenings, so I do not watch tv then. But I will certainly try to tape it and watch it later.

Better Days Ratings

Jack & Bobby was listed in the losers column because it had a 3.0/4 in the overnights. It lost 30% of the charmed lead in with a 4.4/7. Last week was a 4.3/6 in the overnights.

12. not too bad--for a start
isn't Charmed the WB's most popular show (I don't know but I read that a while ago--it may be out of date now). And this is a totally new show--so it is not too bad. I will try to watch it and help the ratings out a bit.

Thanks!

10. I've been watching it
So far it's actually a good show, and since WB killed Angel it's the only thing on that network I'm actually going to watch besides Smallville.

It's been a very pleasant surprise.

16. I saw that!!!
It was really strange...but then it sucked me in. I had no idea what it was at the time I was watching it....the documentary stuff really threw my off....but at the end I was hooked!

It's a really neat idea.

18. Would love to watch but......
it's on at the same time as "American Dream" so I guess I'll switch back and forth. Hmmmmm, I guess "American Dream" will be on again this season.

20. Yes, American Dreams is coming back
and this season things are really heating up with Vietnam protests and all. I love American Dreams. It brings back such memories of childhood for me. My mom says it portrays how the country was at the beginning of the Vietnam War. At first everyone was very gung ho, but gradually, as more and more boys died, the tide of support began to turn.

And back to "Jack & Bobby", I saw the episode where the professor/mom gave the "moonlight speech" to the college students. It was fabulous, spine-tingling. I love that someone has written a great, strong part for a middle aged actress, too.

By the end, when the Republican politician (an actor I recognized, but can't remember his name) was telling about the nasty Republican presidential primary, I was hooked.

I guess I'll be taping Jack & Bobby to watch after American Dreams.

24. I know one of the actors
so I'd be watching it no matter what.

Keep your eyes open for Jamie Denton, who plays the handsome, single plumber on the cul de sac. He's a wonderful actor and a really great guy.

Last year, he starred in Threat Matrix which ABC thoughtfully placed opposite Friends and Survivor, so it didn't...survive. Before that, he had a recurring role on Philly, another ABC show that was terrific, but was also not renewed. He played "Judge Ripley," Kim Delaney's love interest. He was also the psychopathic "Mr. Lyle" on The Pretender, which is still being shown in reruns every day on TNT.
