Utah loses $1 million due to Michael Moore
Am furious! Just heard on Salt Lake news feed that a donor to University has withdrawn $1 million donation as Michael Moore is to speak (with Hannity from Fox yet)

Glad I'm seeing Moore in Reno and not in Salt Lake with those provincial Mormons!

seething.....

Don't be upset to find out that there are consequences for your actions.

4. And that's Michael Moore's fault how exactly?
 Sounds to me like it's due to the donor being an unpatriotic idiot who doesn't believe in free speech.

8. Michael Moore's movie and popularity has caused this neo-con...
...to have an impacted colon. Even the high fiber supplements can not work it loose. So he takes it out on the people of Utah.

5. Did the news say who the donor was?
Moore is actually speaking in Orem, which is much more conservative than Salt Lake.

6. $1 million dollars!!!!!! Egads! </sarcasm off>
The loss of $1 million (of most likely 'dirty money') is a very small price to pay for hearing something approaching the truth....voices like Michael Moore's.

Remember, people don't pay to hear something that goes against what they want to hear. People only pay to hear the 'false prophet types who will tell them 'everything is okay'....open your wallet....it's good for your soul.

9. WTF......if speaking in Orem that's BYU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am astonished that BYU would even let MM on the campus, let alone SPEAK there. This has to be an error in reporting.

14. He's appearing at UVSC
It's a crummy, underfunded state college. They specialize in remedial education for sub-par BYU students and making the never ending stream of Mormon youth employable. Their paper's worth about as much as Northern Quilted; when this is over I'd be better off with a degree from Bob Jones U. What really pisses me off is tickets sold out before I knew they were on sale. Not that it will matter, the Mormon freepers will attend just to disrupt the entire presentation. I feel sorry for Moore and embarrassed to be from Utah.

15. BYU is in Provo, He's speaking at a school in Orem
Edited on Fri Sep-24-04 11:05 AM by Momgonepostal
And you're right, I doubt BYU would pay someone as controversial as Michael Moore to speak on campus. Back when I was a student there in the 80's and 90's, they did have an occasional left of center speaker on campus though. I remember going to hear Sen. Joe Biden speak in the late 80's.

My impressions of UVSC were similar to the other poster's. The people I knew that went there pretty much were there because they didn't have the GPA to get into BYU. I'm sure there were bright students at UVSC, who chose to attend there for other reasons.

At any rate, I think it's great that the school is setting out to get a variety of speakers. I wish I could go hear MM there.

17. Isn't that like terrorists killing a hostage and blaming the people...
who wouldn't meet their demands?

Some guy doesn't like Moore. He demands Moore not be allowed to speak, on threat of withdrawing his donation. When his demands are not met, he goes through with his threat.

AND YOU BLAME MOORE?!!!!!!

With that logic, the terrorists in my example are right.

But I don't think they are. And I don't think you are, either.

It should read "Utah loses $1 million due to fascist who hates democracy and open discussion""

This has nothing to do with Moore and everything to do with fascists wanting to shut down our Constitution.

25. WTF is wrong with these people??????
Hello? Are they trying to snuff out every ounce of dissention from their viewpoint??? Fascism. That's is what we're dealing with now. Assholes like Limbaugh have empowered these narrow minded bigots into thinking they have the right to control the discussion in America!

Guess what? It'll backfire on the VOCAL MINORITY! The NORMAL people in AMerica are starting to smell what they're stepping in, and will toss the bozos that represent this attack on our liberties.

I'm so FUCKING sick of these people trying to stifle debate...

26. I'm sure the University's first thought is what mine (& surely others')was
which is that donors don't dictate the actions of a university. The University would be glad to name a building after a donor, but not to construct its curriculum around what the donor believes.

If the donor really cares about the school, he'll donate. If not, then he won't. Although it's a shame to lose that $$$. (But I suspect that that University doesn't have trouble attracting large donors.)

27. petition to recall
Edited on Fri Sep-24-04 02:03 PM by medeak
Opponents have circulated petitions to force an election to cancel Moore's appearance and recall the student body president and vice president.

They need signatures of 10 percent of the student body - 2,415 students. They say they've gathered 2,000 signatures and student Sean Vreeland, who started the petition, said they expect to have the rest needed by Friday. Two-thirds of the student body would need to vote in favor to remove the student officers and cancel Moore's appearance. http://www.abc4.tv

30. 10 percent should be able to dicate what events ...
the other 90 percent attend?

Whatever happened to just not attending if it's someone you're not interested in hearing?

I've asked myself this and I honestly feel that if I were a college student, and my school were paying to have Ann Coulter come and speak, I 1) wouldn't like it 2) just might write a LTTE giving my reasons 3) might picket but would never dream of trying to get the school to cancel her. Just as long as the school made an honest attempt to get a variety of types of speakers, not just those giving one viewpoint.
