Trying to find that quote Bush made about the U.N. "fading into irrelevancy" or something along those lines. Odd that it's not so irrelevant when he wants their help. Flip-flopper.

1. Google Bush speech un irrelevant white house
"The conduct of the Iraqi regime is a threat to the authority of the United Nations, and a threat to peace. Iraq has answered a decade of U.N. demands with a decade of defiance. All the world now faces a test, and the United Nations a difficult and defining moment. Are Security Council resolutions to be honored and enforced, or cast aside without consequence? Will the United Nations serve the purpose of its founding, or will it be irrelevant?"

2. This what you need?
WASHINGTON (Feb. 13) - On the eve of a showdown over Iraq, President Bush said Thursday the United Nations must help him confront Saddam Hussein or ''fade into history as an ineffective, irrelevant, debating society.''

4. Bush's speech was still condecending to the U.N delagates and...
...the General Assembly so the pResident is still showing defiance and disrespect to this body. No it will be Bush himself along with his neo-con backers who will "fade into history as an ineffective, irrelevant, debating society".

3. You know, I might agree that the UN was made irrelevant....
Edited on Fri Sep-24-04 03:09 PM by htuttle
...because it did not stop the US from invading Iraq when Iraq was disarming according to the UN's resolution.

If the UN cannot protect an already weakened nation from a bully on the Security Council, what can the rest of the nations on earth expect? Even if you follow the UN's resolutions, there's no guarantee the US won't invade anyway.

If ANYTHING made the UN irrelevant, it was its failure to protect Iraq from the US.

7. The UN could have forced a second resolution
The one thing that I faulted France, Germany, and Russia was that they didn't force a vote on the second resolution in the UN Security Council. (Did Germany still have a seat on the security council at that time?) By not forcing a second resolution, which wouldn't have even managed a simple majority of votes on the Security Council, they allowed Bush and Blair to continue to use UN Resolution 1441 as their justification. The UN could have stopped the invasion, or at the very least, stripped it of it's veneer of legitimacy.
