Dan Rather thanked me!
Edited on Fri Sep-24-04 03:04 PM by Book Lover
Yesterday, I sent an email of support to the local CBS TV affiliate, and to the CBS Evening News as well. This afternoon, Mr. Rather was kind enough to reply:

Dear -----,

Your being in touch with support and encouragement at this time means the world to me. I'm unable to fully express how grateful I am for it.

But I do want to say, humbly and heartfelt: thank you.

Cheers and courage,

Dan Rather

If you haven't already, and if you are so inclined, I suggest you take a moment to write expressing support to Mr. Rather and his team.

on edit: My apologies for forgetting to include the email address. Someone below had posted it, but here it is again: evening@cbsnews.com. I can't say why I got a reply this time; it's the first time I've ever received one, and it seems this past year I've sent a more than a few every month, either complaining or complimenting. I am certain Dan appreciates every single note and phone call of support, though. Maybe I just rose to the top of the thank-you pile...

Where's that DANGED *POUT* emoticon??? :)

Thanks for your efforts in writing, Book Lover!

:hi:

Kanary, who really isn't bothered by the lack of replies....... just so long as it's helping the cause, that's all that matters.......

7. Me too. I've sent several and no reply.

Don't really mind, but wonder how they determine who's reply worthy. I'll keep sending emails of support in any case.

15. Never thought of this
So I sent an email of support to them:

I know these last few weeks have been hard. But you should know that I’ve switched from watching NBC Nightly News to CBS Evening News because of the work Dan Rather and 60 minutes have done over the past several months. Over and over again, I’ve seen you get to the TRUTH of events, rather than reporting the White House spin. Whatever happened that allowed those forged documents to get on the air, get over it and get it on with it. Let’s hear the story about the forged Niger documents.

19. I think that's the one that's being used.
I haven't seen a personal one for Rather.

There's a generic one for CBS, but this one goes specifically to Rather and his show.

If someone pops up with a personal email for Rather, disregard my foolish words here. :hi:

25. Very cool, Book Lover!
That even sounds like Dan Rather!

I just fired off my own e-mail to Dan Rather at the address you added, and I really feel better. It had been weighing on my mind, and it feels good to know there's one more messge headed to him now.

Thanks for posting this great info. Very happy to hear it.

26. Let me thank you too!
I sent a message to Dan the Man a few days ago, and just sent him another one.

I sympathized, but pointed out, that as he must surely be aware himself, that what the goons are trying to do to him is something that **anyone** who dares to be critical of -- or even UNBIASED -- about this administration has to face, and that many of us are paying a price for standing up to them. I wrote that CBS must be aware of their tactics and what they are trying to achieve. I thanked him for standing up to them, told him a LOT of us are standing right there next to him in the line of fire, and concluded that when the history of our time gets written, their attempt to committ character assassination upon him will be remembered as a very shameful episode.

Dan is the LAST holdout among broadcast journalists. Peter Jennings, who I used to admire, has sold out or has been intimidated. I KNOW he is an intelligent and insightful man, and what he must really be thinking, but he just sits there and lets the lies wash over him. He doesn't have the guts to face them down -- not that that is not understandable, because as we all have seen, they stop at NOTHING to destroy people.

Anyone who thinks the Sovietization of our news media bodes anything but great evil for our country is very seriously deluded. My friends, we will live to see some very difficult times. The longer we take to confront the fascists, and decredit them, the more terrible the times will be.

Gee -- Dan COULD be a part of it, if he chooses to expose them. It would be the biggest story of his long career, and the crowning achievement of his life. Yes, there would be terrible chaos and upheaval. But do any of us REALLY think, at this stage, there is a way we can avoid upheaval and chaos and strife in our land? But sooner or later, it has to come.

28. Here it is

My note was directed to the news director of my local CBS affiliate and cc'd to the Evening News folks:

Dear -----,

I understand there has been an active campaign initiated to inundate CBS and its affiliates with mail written to pressure stations to remove Dan Rather as anchor of the "CBS Evening News." I have been a regular viewer of the "CBS Evening News" since my move to ----- - years ago, and I am writing to you today to counter this campaign. Dan Rather has usefully served his viewing public for many years, and to see him removed over one issue, most particularly *this* issue, would be inappropriate, at least in this viewer's eyes. I encourage you and the CBS News team to ignore those who would remove him. Thank you.

Sincerely,

I really encourage folks to write their own notes, though.

29. Keep writing --ask others to write.... Remember, the RW is bombarding CBS!
This is how the RW took power....... they are organized, and they never fail to have their say.

We have a lot of catching up to do in this regard.

So, write, call, and remind others every chance you get.

And, thanks for your efforts!

He will probably appreciate all the support he can get. He's not the one who did something wrong, so why is the one who is having to pay the consequences? Dan :hi: :dem:

32. Here's mine
I understand you are being deluged by the right-wing nutjobs about the TANG memos. Just wanted to let you know that I have written all of the CBS affilliates to tell them that I am proud of CBS's efforts in exposing this story, and that I have, for the first time, made a point to watch the news on my local affiliate. (CBS 11, Dallas).

I personally think that Karl Rove's greasy little fingerprints are all over this one. I hope that you continue to pursue the story until you have nailed them to the WALL. The current administration is corrupt and is a danger to our free society. You are doing a service to our country and have every right to be proud of yourself as a person and as a journalist.

Courage.
