Poll question: Is the GOP trying to rewrite history? All of it?
Edited on Sat Sep-25-04 01:12 AM by 0rganism
It happens every day with Iraq: the situation is always improving, even if the attacks are more frequent, especially with the elections approaching, which everyone obviously wants, except the insurgents who are all foreign Al Qaeda members like Saddam. Yellow cake from Niger. Tons of sarin. Or was it just a bad man who tried to kill my daddy?

It happens with the economy: bush's tax cuts are stimulating growth and creating jobs, despite a 1.2 Million net loss according to the payroll survey by the CBO.

We've seen it happen on the "memos" story already: suddenly the forgery of the CBS memos somehow indicates that bush completed his service in the ANG honorably, despite confirmations from all human sources that the contents of the memos are accurate in spite of their presentation.

We've seen it happen to John Kerry's war record, too: out of the woodwork come disgruntled vets willing to contradict their own tales of valor to besmirch Sen. Kerry's heroism.

We've seen it happen to the Iran-Contra affair: the convicted criminals are given prime-time talk shows and lucrative government contracts.

We've seen FDR's New Deal blamed for everything from taxes to chlymidia. You'd think it was a yoke of oppression rather than an answer to the Great Depression -- which never really happened.

We've seen the USA transformed from a secular republic to a Christian's Only club, with other faiths allowed by invitation only.

Now, they may be trying to do it for the ancestral Nazi bushes: associating the well-known public records of Prescott Bush and George Walker's Nazi-funding operation at UBC with Brown Brothers Harriman with alleged leaks of classified documents by the Kerry campaign. Presumably, by tying these alleged leaks to the credibility of the ANG memos, the bush family's association with Nazis can be discredited as well.

How far will they go? How far CAN they go?

1. All the way, man. This game is played for keeps.
I hope copies of all the books that tell the truth about this administration (from Against All Enemies to Republican Noise Machine, to The Politics of Truth to Worse Than Watergate) will go to several overseas countries who'll keep them safe for posterity's sake.

If Bush wins (steals) the election, we haven't seen anything yet.

2. Bush will not be writing the history of this time.
The victor writes the history. If Bush is reappointed as president, some country, probably either Russian or one now considered to be part of the Third World, will unite the rest of the world against us, defeat us and write the history from its point of view. How can I say that? Because Bush has established a pattern of losing in his life. The only thing Bush has ever succeeded at was getting elected governor of Texas -- and he had very little to do with that success. He is too incompetent, arrogant and undisciplined to change his pattern of failure. If we are to continue our leadership role in the world, we have to vote him out of office.
