Liberal First Principles.
What do you believe that sets you apart from conservatives? Here are some of mine; conservatives can't claim to believe any of these:

- A person’s worth is based upon his humanity; not his heritage, skin color, gender, beliefs, or wealth.

- Taxes are not the greatest evil in the world.

- My neighbors are not my enemy.

- Greed is not a virtue. It should be punished, not rewarded.

- Poverty is not a sin. It should be alleviated, not punished.

- Cooperation is a better than confrontation.

- Equality is better than inequality.

- Representative government requires participation of citizens, open debate of the issues, and willingness to compromise.

- Corporations should not have more rights & influence than individuals.

- An individual should not be forced to act in a way that demeans himself, or demeans others.

- A person bares personal responsibility - except where his choices have been eliminated by others.

- A person has individual freedom, which is limited only by the freedom of others.

- Respect begets respect; it should be promoted. Disrespect begets disrespect; it should be avoided.

- If another person suffers, it has a negative effect on MY life.

2. I think the thing that sets us apart is our belief
that the government is "of the people, for the people." And not, "of the large corporations, for the large corporations."

Conservatives see the world in black and white: you're for us or against us. Every stand they ever take on an issue reflects this mentality. For example, they believe abortion is murder. Period.
They leave no room to debate the possibility that there might be legitimate reasons to have an abortion (i.e, a fetus that is not viable and will suffer terrible agony from the moment of delivery until the moment of death). Sorry, nope. No abortion for you.

Liberals see the world in color. Look at how far apart we are on the issue of gay marriage (I saw the posts this morning about Obama saying he was opposed to gay marriage, but for civil unions). While we may be far apart on this issue, at least it's being discussed. Conservatives just want an amendment to ban it - end of discussion.

I also think conservatives have and inherent lack of curiosity and have an inherent inability to "walk a mile in someone else's shoes." There is no compassion in conservatives.

6. not only are taxes not the greatest evil in the world...
they aren't evil at all.

everybody pooling their funds for the common good?

nothing evil about it.
in fact, when you consider our country's quality of life, we're getting a pretty good deal.
