Hurricane Jean may be the most deadly hurricane of all time.
Amazing how nothing from Haiti is on the news. What is it with people in this country?

Anyway, our illustrious president gave Haiti $60,000. Yes, no extra zeros. As of yesterday, 2,000 dead and 250,000 displaced. But that's not even the worst of it. Just north of Haiti is a small island named Tortuga. They had 26,000 people living there before Jean slammed Haiti. No one can find the island. It has vanished along with all 26,000 people. I first heard of this on www.whatreallyhappened.com. No where else. Finding information about it on the internet has been hard too. It must be a disaster of extremely large proportions down there.

Yep, it's a big mess.

2. Well, Duh, Haitians Don't Vote For Him
So why should Bush send all kinds of money there? I mean, Florida is a swing state so it makes sense to pledge lots of money to us, to hand out ice, etc. But don't be so niave...what would Dubya possibly have to gain by helping the people in Haiti?

Why do you think Cubans who make it to Florida without being intercepted by the Coast Guard are allowed to stay but Haitians are sent back even if they will likely be unfairly persecuted? And Haiti has no oil so why should we try to help them have Democracy? Get real. Besides, most of the poeple in Haiti are BLACK and Americans don't care when black people die. I ask again, what is in it for us to help Haiti?

>sarcasm off<

Oh yeah, compassion, world community and all that other stuff not important to the man who currently occupies the Oval Office.

3. It's in the news everywhere I look
What news organizations are you looking at that don't mention it?

That said, my wife has a friend who lives there, and she said it is very bad.

She said Haiti is in the midst of a violent political upheaval (political factions attacking the government, looting, etc) and so the people have been totally unable to cope with the damage from Jeanne. To make it worse, because of the violence, humanitarian organizations aren't able to distribute aid very well.

6. I live in Florida and I get all my news off the internet. Even so, all
local news here is about hurricanes. That has pretty much been the subject of conversation for the last 6 weeks. My dad watches CNN occasionally and he didn't know anything about it either.

11. Florida papers are covering it
I'm in Florida as well. Certainly the incoming hurricane is the big news, but they covered Haiti as well. Here's yesterday's St Pete Times:

5. Try the international red cross...
I find it reprehensible that * isn't sending military planes to Haiti full of relief supplies to help these poor people. Especially after he orchestrated the recent coup that removed the democratically elected President of Haiti.

Haiti is a nightmare that could have been easily averted by a quick response on our part.

7. I heard that Canada is sending 2 million in aid, and the U.S. is
sending 1 million. There were 250,000 people living in the city and they became homeless in one night. It's a mess. God help us if an epidemic starts in Haiti, because you know it will make it to the U.S.

8. I just saw an extended piece on it on CNN
Well, extended in this case means more than the typical minute or so. There are UN troops there, things are absolutely horrible. No food, (no water?), and people are near riot stage.

Heartbreaking.

I'm also worried about FL. There are many people who just aren't evacuating THIS time. :scared:

10. On whatreallyhappened.com, the Tortuga disaster is declared a hoax.
It is a deserted island--no people on it.

13. On CNN International they showed the video of the Haitians
chasing the trucks that had food and water. It didn't look like there were enough relief workers for the hungry crowd. I know our government can squeeze about enough supplies and fly it to Haiti to help those people. It is really sad watching this on tv.

14. Here's a BBC link
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3683608.stm

"Bodies swept out to sea have washed up on La Tortue island, though aid agencies say the island itself was not hit as badly as at first thought."

15. Shithead should have just mailed them an envelope full of his jizz.
$60,000 in aid in the face of disaster is worse than sending nothing at all.
