remember Nixon/ Agnew demands that TV networks stop comments on speech ???
on speeches???
Agnew was the 'attack dog'. They were furious that network commentators immediately started talking about a speech right after Nixon (or others in administration) had given one.
They listed the points made and discussed the truth/falsity of the statements/claims.
Agnew roared that the 'commentators' were telling the public how to interpret the speeches. Nixon/Agnew 'forced' the media to stop commenting on speeches. As I recall, they didn't even summarize.
When did this commentary start again?? Wouldn't it be nice if the block still existed, even tho Nixon/Agnew forced it on a reasonably 'objective' media??????
The media DIDN'T stop.. That's how we finally got Nixon the hell outa there. Media was doing it's job back then. They never just took the administrations word, they asked questions, they did some legwork to find out the truth.
2. as I recall, they did stop for a while.....but for how long I'm not sure
For a while, Nixon had lots of weapons to use against the news media; for a while, they and many in the US were very afraid of what he might do to his 'enemies'.
