Is the rest of the country waking up to the oil situation now?
I can't tell, I'm kind of submerged in it these days. Are people waking up and realizing that this is a big deal?

1. Not around Kansas City
I don't think. But people here have to drive long distances because the city is so spread out. So gas prices will be noticed before too long if they keep going up.

2. i think we'll know when they wake up
because all hell will break loose.

for the FEW i know who will even admit to the "eventual" possibility of peak oil, they don't think it will bother them much.

<judgy rant>
idiots. peak oil will make the Great Depression look like a sunday bake sale.

3. I mentioned peak oil to a group of well educated co-workers
-- some liberal, some conservative -- & no one knew what I was talking about. When I explained, they said, "We'll never see it in our lifetimes." Sheesh, these people are in their late 30s, early 40s.

4. Whenever I bring it up...
I usually just get flat out denial and all the usual arguments "alternative energy" "new oil reserves" "that's what they said in the seventies" "technology will save us" One guy even said "we can make plastic from trees"

Very few people are open minded enough to even listen to what you say, but once in a while you get someone who is.
