News you don't get on CNN or anywhere else.
I was watching the news broadcast on Link TV this morning. This is a really bare bones, practically no resources news, but yet they were able to report on the important news happenings around the world, including what is really happening today in Iraq, without once referring to Laci Peterson, Michael Jackson or Koby Bryant. So they had a little interesting piece on university students in Tucson, Arizona who had a drive to register other students to vote.

It was a non-partisan effort from both Democratic and Republican students to sign up unregistered voters. Well, it turns out that Fox News came by and informed the students that they were committing a felony. So the students actually looked up the statutes and laws and it turns out that Fox News was not correct in this at all. Fox said they could only sign up those students who intended to stay in Arizona indefinitely and to register students who may not stay was a felony.

It turns out that the Supreme Court had ruled at one time that indefinitely meant only until after the election. (Paraphrasing here so I hope it doesn't sound too vague.) So the students are a little upset as to why Fox News would be trying to intimidate them this way. So I haven't been able to find any other source of this story other than Link TV who did interview two of the students involved.

If this is the beginning of Goebbel's Intimidation Propaganda News Network, I think we need to send Rupert Murdoch packing. Spreading disinformation as entertainment is one thing. Strong arming those who are trying to do the right thing is totally Gestapo tactics.

2. I just think it's insidious they would intimidate young people
like this. I wish I had more information. There was a website but I can't remember it right now. I've had a hellish day with DH and his medical problems so I couldn't post right away or get things down, but I still felt compelled to get it out since no one else has that I have been able to find here on DU.

3. And there is also ...
Free Speech TV = FSTV. You would not believe what they show. I get it on Dish ... but if you don't get it on cable or sattelite, call your provider and ask for it by name.

Seriously, if enough people demand it, you might get it.

Anybody else watch it?

9. The college republicans were doing that here in town.
The College Democrats had to go around an educate the students on their rights.

Many colleges skirting voting registration law, survey finds

Tuesday, September 14, 2004

WASHINGTON — More than a third of U.S. colleges and universities fail to properly provide students with voter registration forms despite a federal mandate to do so, researchers reported Monday.

Harvard University's Institute of Politics and The Chronicle of Higher Education gathered information from 249 schools about their compliance with the federal Higher Education Act of 1998. The law requires campuses to request voter registration forms from election officials at least 120 days before the registration deadline, and make a "good-faith effort" to distribute them to students.

About 36 percent of campuses "are not only failing the letter and spirit of the law, but also failing their students," David King, associate director of the Institute of Politics, said at a news conference. He said the problem exists in every region of the country.

Failure to comply with the act could result in a loss of federal funding, though King said the rules are rarely enforced.
