BYRD on BUSH (his book is a MUST READ)
BYRD on BUSH (a snip from his new book, "Losing America")

discussing a meeting with the pResident regarding the formation of the Homeland Security Department...
I repeated that, as yet, "I don't know what 'this thing' is." The president responded with a non sequitur, thanking me for my statement and assuring me that is would be considered. Then he promptly rose and headed for the door. Amazing. I might as well have been reciting a recipe for Christmas fruitcake. My opinion of meetings at the White House hit a new low.

I was struck by the President's dismal performance. To say it was mediocre would be a gross exaggeration. He was disorganized, unprepared, and rambling. This fellow was all hat and no cattle, as they would say in Texas. It was obvious that he had no idea what was in his Department of Homeland Security, nor did he seem to care.

<snip>

But this president, this Bush number 43, was in a class by himself–ineptitude supreme. This meeting with Bush the Younger had topped anything I had seen, from Truman on, for absolute tripe!

I HIGHLY recommend this book. Byrd is ruthless in his criticism of the bushies (he uses that word for them!) and provides a real look into the behind-the-scenes working of the Senate.

1. It does bash Bush well
It also bashes the Senate Democrats, like Kerry, who didn't stand up to the war in Iraq and other Bush policies. It made me want to get rid of Bush but it didn't make me very happy with Kerry as our nominee either.

5. true, but, what he says about the Senate Dems
is TRUE. so, good for him for telling it like it is.

think there's going to be an anti-Kerry book that is honest on repukes? I doubt it.

2. "That callow boy"
was my favorite reference to Bush. The Senator used it in one of the IWR speeches.

I love to see that picture of him. He's so frail on the screen but here, in freeze frame, you can see his vitality and strength.

3. Excellent book!
I've read it and it is very powerful. It's heartbreaking to read of Byrd's frustration with the assaults on the Constitution and understand exactly what is going on in Congress.

4. He's an interesting "hero"
for liberals. Here's a guy who's done next to nothing to help people in his home state, one of the poorest in the nation, and just has a machine to keep himself in power election after election. I'm not saying the book isn't true, and I'm glad he's against the Iraq war, but he's not my hero either.

6. Done nothing for his state?
Come on, as chair of ways and means he's gotten tons of stuff for his state. There's a reason Harper's Ferry is one of the best funded National Parks in America. Are you forgetting what he's done for coal miners over the years?

7. well, I don't know WV very well...
but, I doubt any Senator could last as long as Byrd with a record of doing 'next to nothing' for his home state.

OTOH, I have read that Byrd has been very effective in delivering his share of 'pork'...
