He didn't always walk like that. He used to walk more like an Enron exec, a businessman, when that was in fashion.

But 9/11 changed everything with his gait. The schoolyard got a lot more dangerous and he couldn't afford to get picked on. Heaven forbid, his dad had warned him, don't get tagged with the "wimp factor".

So he adopted a bowlegged gait. As if there just wasn't enough room between those loins for the pair of huevos he carried.

When you're running for class president, it wouldn't do to get picked on. And clankin' is his lucky spell. It's the Humvee of strides.

Watch him walk and pretend to clank. Every campaign stop, you wonder how he ever sits down without adjusting those imaginary things in the sling.

Each day he hopes no bully pushes him down or bloodies his nose. At least not until after the election. He dreads for the gait suddenly be shown for what it is -- bluster. Lying there in the dust on the schoolyard. Classmates not moving to help him because finally their suspicions were affirmed: you walk around clanking like that, you get what you deserve.
