14. Use a magnet
Then you can take it off in areas that the idiots will damage your car for having one.

116. Or tape a clear plastic report holder on the inside of your window
Bumperstickers slide in and out, and you can change your message frequently instead of plastering your car with a bunch of stickers.

126. You can stick them on the outside corner of the rear window.
They scrape off easily with a razor blade when you're done, they don't leave a scratch (as opposed to on the paint, where they do.)

36. Problem is we can't locate your Kerry sticker...
with all the other worthy causes screaming at us! ;)
Kerry's sticker is on your car, true, but you'd have to pass the Evelyn Wood speed reading course to locate it in traffic. Is it true that people actually sit in lawn chairs and read you car while it's parked?

Proud Patriot's car voted "Favorite car to get stuck behind in traffic"

Oh, OneHandle, we have a pre VP Edwards selection Kerry sticker in the rear window.

Have the Kerry/Edwards one, the Arranged Marriage w/John Kerry one, the MoveOn one that has the Mission crossed out to read Nothing Accomplished and one for Majette for US Senate.

I've had people flip me off, ride my bumper, shake their fist, etc.
Just smile and flash them the peace sign. It totally pisses them off.

84. Vandalism is a real fear for some of us
I live in redneck country where we tend to have a vandalism problem anyway--at night drunks destroy mailboxes, throw things at cars and, occasionally, drive into houses. Don't want to rile redneck drunks up with signs.

I do, however, have a magnetic bumper sticker that I affix whenever I leave.

13. A few reasons: I live in CT and at least in the area
where I live I have seen about maybe a whopping 3 signs, and a grand total of ONE yard sign. Although CT is solidly blue there are wingnuts here too. I have a new car and I don't care to have it vandalized. Also I absolutley hate having any kind of sticker or decal on my car, especially if its new.

How many signs did Howard Dean have in New Hampshire? I wager somewhere between a shit load and a fuck load. What about Gephardt in Iowa?

Your assessment is straight out of some poorly produced "Politics For Idiots" guide and not rooted in any fact whatsoever. If winning elections were that simple, I wager you might even be able to get elected.

Show me some kind of scientific analysis of your claim or go elsewhere with this nonsense.

18. Honestly, because I care about my kid
I had one all summer, but once school started, I realized that having a Kerry sticker on my car while dropping my 8th grader off at a school where probably 80% of the kids and their parents are hopeless Shrub supporters would make his life more miserable than it already is. My compromise is that I have a Kerry pin on my purse. I have a K/E sticker that I tape to my back window when I am alone in the car. I also have a sticker on the dash and I honk and show it to any other car I see with a K/E sticker. I donate and volunteer my time. I don't think my having a sticker on my car all the time would make enough of a difference to make it worthwhile.

141. Thanks for understanding.
My son is very politically astute and I am extremely proud of him. In 2000, he proudly announced that he was voting for Gore in his class mock election. He was the only Gore vote out of 32 kids and his nickname for the rest of the year was "Sore Loserman". He was only 9 and new in the school. My son can debate politics better than 90% of adult Americans. He is a solid Kerry supporter. He told me it was OK to leave my bumper sticker on, but I wasn't willing to make him pay that price again. A bumper sticker isn't going to convince anyone. I think my efforts are better spent doing things that will actually make a difference in the election. So far, I've donated over $1500 to various dem supporting groups. I am a block captain. I just volunteered to be a part of the Kerry legal team and to be a poll watcher on election day. I also signed up to spend several hours a week phone banking, etc at the local Kerry headquarters. I was deeply upset by the other responses to my post, yours was a breath of fresh air.

22. Bumper sticker, but not the yard
No, I live in Redneckland and I don't need all my neighbors hating me. I've already seen creepy, redneck-looking guys in camouflage trucks driving slowly past my house and peering at my bumper sticker.
Also want to add that I read a study that bumper stickers actually do have an effect. Wish I had the link. But they said that people (fence-sitters) like to go with the apparent winner sometimes. So the more Kerry stickers out there, the better. Also, it makes people know it's ok to support a certain candidate when they see real people, their neighbors, supporting them. The last good reason to have one is that it makes other Kerry supporters VERY happy to see them and you know how alone you can feel when you live in Republicanland.

99. I was the first on my street to put up a K/E yard sign, and
I was a little nervous. But since then 5 more have appeared, and it makes me feel so good about those neighbors! Two of the signs at one end of the street keep getting stolen, but the people go and get another one to replace - I love those people! I look for yard signs when I drive through neighborhoods in my town and I feel great seeing the K/E ones (though they are slightly outnumbered by the bush ones.)

I heard that having a Kerry bumpersticker is the same as donating $250 per month to the campaign because you are advertising for him. I'm willing to do whatever I can, and if some of my neighbors don't like me for being a Kerry supporter, then f*ck them. Life is short, stand for something!

Its not like someone will look at it and go "gosh that guy in the cool ford focus is voting for Kerry so will I!"

Ruin my car for 30+ days of uselessness, and potentially bad (nothing good will happen for sure and it could be bad) - nah.

The horror stories on this MB solidly confirmed my antisticker position.

32. I've never, ever in my life, had a bumper sticker on my car.
But I do now!

I live in a town that has, over the many years I've lived her, changed from a semi-rural place with a number of farms Ñ to a yuppified, McMansionized, SUV-driving, Republican-voting (in Massachusetts, no less!) town.

What I see in the parking lots around town are plenty of those yellow, twisty ribbon "support the troops" stickers. The odd thing is, they are NOT accompanied by any other political bumper sticker Ñ no B/C, nor K/E.

Odd.

I am in sales in puke heavy area of Michigan right now. I keep my DEAN sticker because pukes think its cute (if they remember him at all)! A Kerry sticker would definately cost me sales here in Rochester Hills, so I can't flag my car, but my house looks like a regular whistle stop for democracy. Three lawn signs, signs in window, and my husband's car is "liberally" festooned with Kerry/Edwards, DEAN, and Democracy for America stickers.

I'll decide whether to bump one of the anti-war stickers for a Kerry/Edwards sticker after Thursday's debate.

I'm in Southern California and take freeway to work each day; I'd estimate a 20-1 ratio of K/E to B/C based on my driving experiences.

67. Anyone worried about vandalism
just glue a magnetic strip onto the back of the bumper sticker and take it on/off at will. Drive around with it on and take it off when you park. I understand your worries about vandalism, but this will help.

I use bumper stickers and window decals, plus different magnets on the car to rotate messages. I get such a kick out of seeing other K/E stickers when I'm out and about that I broke down and decided to put some on my car. First time in my life, too. But I have a LOT of company around here -- and I live in the Texas Hill Country. More K/E stickers than * stickers, by my count. Unscientific, of course!

168. I want to take a shot at this (very long)
I'm a libertarian. Yes, that is a small-L libertarian -- but the reason that I don't vote Libertarian is because they're not fucking serious -- most of the party is disaffected, former GOP members -- for god's sake -- when you have a "libertarian" party platform that's split over abortion, as in owning the property that is your own body -- something stinks to all get out.

So, I think it taints libertarianism, particularly since there are libertarian veins that rely on the Marxist critique of society, but still do not believe in government "coersion." Meaning, that I personally would favor a society where 1. Trade unions were strong, and cooperatives thrived 2. People were discriminate about where they put their dollar and their labor, keeping corrupt companies in check by refusing to work for them or buy their products 3. Government was decentralized, with the state and local levels have more control 4. Drugs, of course, legalized, and the drug war ends 5. Open borders 6. No pre-emptive war, and the ONLY use of the military would be to defend our shores -- not manipulate other countries, be the world policeperson, or clear the way for corporate interest 7. I wish, like the "Big-L" libertarians that the U.S. government would cede some public lands to ranchers, but that most protected public land should be returned to Native American tribes, or be owned by the Sierra Club, or the Audubon Society 8. The corporation should be cut off from the government -- meaning no tax incentives, no handouts, no bailouts, no access to the treasury, tax dollars, and that the corporation would be stripped of its human status and have no voice in the making of laws and 9. That people would take care of their families -- meaning their elderly parents, and have larger extended-family networks, be thrifty and not wasteful and that "personal responsiblity" would have to apply to everyone -- including bankers, business people, CEOs, small business owners, politicians, police and the military.

What sets me apart from most of the right-leaning and "big-L" libertarians, is that I don't privilege, morally, the "anarchocapitalist" or neo-liberal view as over the communal, or anarchosyndicalist view. I think I'm a true libertarian, meaning that I support both the individual and the collective, and that in a truly responsible and virtuous society, a la Thomas Jefferson, a la Rousseau, the collective would be as important as the individual, and the individual would still never be coerced, but would be a good person.

Call me a dreamer.

So, I don't jive well with pretend right-wing libertarians, who think that "libertarian" actually just means that you'll be "free of those totalitarian commies on the left," which is a large part of the make up of the Libertarian party, though, I agree that they have a range, just like the Democratic party and the Scum-butt-lickin Party.

Fundamentally, it's that true libertarianism shouldn't "pride" capitalism over communalism, or vice-versa, really. The problem with anarchocapitalists and neoliberals is that they simply want the government not to interfere with capitalism -- many of these people are totally into totalitarianism, outside of that -- and are into Ayn Rand, Friedman, and Rothbund, whom, in my opinion, are snake-oil salesmen and women, and either try to shut out the "virtue" or "altruism" part of government that was discussed PROMINENTLY in the shaping of our nation -- the Bill of Rights, Rousseau, Jeffersonian, Enlightenment philosophies -- OR they try to link capitalism and God, which is just fucking crazy. People should stick with Mises and Hayek, in my opinion. Anyway, that's another story.

So why am I voting for John Kerry, and why should you? I'll tell you why I became a libertarian, in the first place. I used to be FIRMLY state socialist, pro-Affirmative Action, into identity politics -- the entire leftist thing, and I NEVER REALIZED the drawbacks to this, until I was introduced to "Big Brother on the Right," which is -- and I don't know how you can say they're the same -- way far fucking more scary that the very limited socialism of the Democratic left. At best, the Democrats want to give society the modernist blank slate, where everyone is equal, pluralism is privileged, and you have to chunk out a little money on the side to support the Welfare state. The GOP, on the other hand, has some very disturbing fundamentalist, xenophobic, racist, misogynist, greedy, arrogant elements that hold it together, and further, have tried to turn capitalism, which is essentially a system devoid of moral values, into an absolute, moralist value (this is why I can't stand Friedman).

The cultural supremacism of the right is far more viscious, magical, superstitious and, uh, primitive than the identity politics of the left. Of course, I do feel that the best course, charted by reason and self-evidence for governance is classical liberalism and anarchism and libertarianism -- whatever you want to call it, whichever way you want to lean.

But here's the thing -- it's an ideology, and while it's fun to be an ideologue, when you come to the table, your policies have to have some application in the "real world." So, oddly, for me, being also in favor of consensus building, yet being something of a radical in philosophy -- I end up being a middle-of-the-roader. Because, face it, the parties together, in cooperation, check each other and balance each other out, keeping "robbed liberty" somewhat balance, and therefore more fair. YES I do feel that overall, the dems are too far to the right, but they're actually FAR more centrist, in the grand scheme of political philosophy, than the GOP which is seriously flirting with fascism.

If a person is not bright enough to realize that the GOP, and their policies are more of an affront to the Constitution, classical liberalism, rationality, and the virtue of Jefferson than the the Democrats, I feel sorry for you, because you've been brainwashed by the right-wing.

Now, there IS the idea, that many anarchists/libertarians hold that you should hurry the collapse of the system -- in which case, that would mean you vote for Bush. However, even though the corporations will continue to buy up the government and render the concept of fair law useless, I don't necessarily bank on the culture war igniting. For one thing -- everyone's fat -- and lethargic. Second, I'm not entirely sure, that, even though I'm paranoid of the religious right, that the GOP isn't just kind of "stringing them along," with some of this bullshit hope of turning this country into a fundamentalist paradise of crap. Because, remember, their first loyalty is to corpo-fascism, and those that are hybrids (Chrisitan zealots and corpo-fascists) are worshipping a kind of Christianity that privileges money over the real teachings of Jesus. I think that corporate profit relies, to some extent, on a modicum of decadence, prurience and instant gratification -- things that aren't really compatible with the Puritains of the religious right. And, in addition, like some people, I don't even fear the collapse of the welfare state with the GOP in charge, as Bush has shown us -- they don't want to reduce taxes, or reduce distant control of your life -- they just want to shift it from government to corporate -- a kind of fake privitization that is every bit as much "on the teat," as the welfare state.

So I really think the GOP rhetoric is all bullshit -- Orweillian and magical-thinking to the point that anyone that takes any of their social values or freedom talk or liberty talk, or "small government" rhetoric is seriously an A-1, major league, first class fucking moron.

And that's really the point -- to rope idiots into support the corpo-fascists. I mean what part of socially engineered "trickle down," which shifts the tax burden to the middle class, using the military as a corporate arm, tax incentives, closed-door policies favoring big business, taxpayer monies funnelled into Halliburton, so they can pay a mercenary a 100 thousand dollars a year, while our soldiers make squat, the corporation getting human status in the courts, bailouts, subsidies -- and having our politicians be either CEOS, cronies or family members of proven, corrupt compaines (Columbia/HCA Bill Frist), or owned by them.

Honey, what part of that is free market? It's the marriage of corporations and government -- which is the exact opposite.

Anyway, the main reason to vote for Kerry, and I'm here to tell you, if you can't see how much more fucked up the right is than the left, then you've been part of some MK-Ultra, Britney Spears, LSD in the drinking water, wear sunglasses-see aliens, kind of major mind fuck up.

So vote for Kerry -- unless you think the GOP is brave enough to take their social ideological extremism far enough to literally collapse the system by which wealth is protected and concentration of wealth is encouraged, and the plebeians are kept from storming the estate driveway and putting the ultra-richies' heads on posts in the front yard, with their breads and circuses, and their Social Security check.

In other words -- that's a bigger fucking pipedream than libertarianism. :)

the sign is mostly noticed by moose and bears. There was a woodpecker sitting on it the other day, but he was a Democratic woodpecker so did it no damage.

I have a couple stickers on my vehicle, even here in red Wyoming. It have them to help initiate conversations, some of which have revealed interest from folks I wouldn't have expected. They're also there so that the other handful of folks with similar views in this area know to wave and give a thumbs up when we pass each other on the road.

I did get physically accosted once a few months ago, but he was pretty inept and it came to nothing.

bumper stickers I was promised for my donation months ago (remember when DU had an official Kerry campaign contribution drive?). If I had 'em, I'd put 'em on my car--in fact, I very much want to do that. I have e-mailed Kerry HQ 3 times asking about my bumper stickers but have never received an answer. I guess they don't really care if people display the stickers or not.

I have to agree with you, WHH. However, you do realize, don't you, that here in Montgomery County (Dayton, Ohio) Dem HQ had NO PLANS to give out yard signs. No plans; nada, zip, zilch.

The co-chair of my visibility committee footed the bill to order 2,000 signs; she used her credit card to buy them. She HAD to be reimbursed for the money, and as soon as she was, we gave away most of the remaining signs.

They have 2,500 signs at Dem HQ -- signs that can't be used because the poly-bags don't fit the wickets. Big blunder. What are they doing about it? Nada, zip, zilch.

People drive downtown, park their cars, walk to HQ and leave empty-handed and angry.

Go figure.

I've no excuse, except i figured any scottish people who see the
sticker on a scottish car, might not even know what it was.

That said, why the hell not.

As for the yard sign... its all a bit much in rural scotland. I'd
be much better with a liberal democrats sign... but they're already
in power for this area, so its not much of a start.... plus
nobody will come down a mile of dirt road to see a sign in a
foreign country to vote in a US election.

How much donation would it take, for DU to send out a Kerry sticker
along with the democraticunderground.com sticker i already have on
me car? Perhaps we can get DU a buncha stickers so they send out
both with every contribution... is that reasonable?

Surprisingly, MANY more Kerry signs than * signs in my neighborhood (I live in southeast Houston). Just as a guesstimate, I'd say about 5 Kerry signs to every * sign, and people with Kerry signs in their yard tend to display several, where people with * signs only have one.

4) Bush and Orwell' 04

I'll be happy to put more anti-Bush stickers on my car. Be damned if I'm putting a pro-Kerry sticker on until and unless I find a reason to be pro-Kerry. He gets my vote, but it's only because he's not Bush. If you don't like that, that's your problem. He gets my vote, so shut up about it.

I did it because I wanted to show pride in our candidate and as something of a social experiment. I'll be honest, though. I probably wouldn't have done it if I didn't intend to get rid of the truck early next year.

I have had it on for about two weeks, and I have already picked up one Brownshirt-o-gram from an unnamed co-worker advising me to "wake up". I'll be interested to see what the next few weeks bring.

What's the point in buying a completely non-descript car if you're going to personalize it to the point that it becomes obvious that it's yours?
