This afternoon, I berated the crap out of a right-wing douche bag.
Edited on Thu Sep-30-04 05:49 PM by NightTrain
I still can't believe I goaded that guy the way I did, but I was too pissed off to give a fuck about the possible consequences.

I was out on my delivery route today when a pick-up truck came up on my left. As it went by me, I saw the most sickening collection of bumper stickers ever to attack my eyeballs. Here are the ones I remember:

G.O.P. - GOD'S OWN PARTY.

PRESIDENT BUSH 2004: ONE GOOD TERM DESERVES ANOTHER.

GUN CONTROL MEANS USING BOTH HANDS. (Second time this week I've seen that one!)

THE ROAD TO HELL IS PACED WITH LIBERALS.

CLINTON DIDN'T INHALE: HE SUCKS.

I'D RATHER BE KILLING DEMOCRATS.

But what really set me off was what that douche bag wrote in his back window in white crayon:

KERRY LIED AND REAL VETS DIED!

When we stopped at a red light, I pulled up next to the guy, who had his windows rolled down, and yelled, "LOSER!"

To my amazement, he didn't reply. You'd think a fella with bumper stickers that inflammatory would jump at the chance to defend his most cherished beliefs against a got-damn librul, but not that gutless turd.

When the light turned green, Mr. Blood-and-Guts Republican gunned his accelerator and blew past me. I gave him the finger as he did so.

The road narrowed, so I got behind that fuckwad at the next red light. I stuck my head out the window and shouted, "HEY MOTHERFUCKER, I'M A LIBERAL DEMOCRAT! YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH ME?"

Again, he didn't reply. He didn't so much as give me the finger, even with his left arm hanging out his driver's-side window.

I tried again. "YEAH, YOU AIN'T SHIT WITHOUT YOUR GUN, ARE YOU, JOHN WAYNE? HOW FUCKIN' CLOSE HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO A WAR, YOU PUSSY?"

Finally, I got behind him at one final stoplight before I had to turn onto a side street. I stuck my head out the window again and yelled, "PRESIDENT KERRY, YOU ASSHOLE!"

I wonder what it would've taken to set that fucker off? Hell, he probably dealt with my little dressing-down by going home and beating up on "The Little Woman." Piece of shit.

75. If it was his wife's car, it means one of two things:
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 03:23 PM by calimary
Either he married someone who feels exactly like he does, or he doesn't mind, ONE BIT, climbing behind the wheel of a car that carries that hatred all over its bumpers.

A little over the top, but I LOVED EVERY CAPITAL LETTER OF IT!

Sorry. It's not "turn the other cheek." It's probably not what Jesus would do or what Jenna would drink. But DAMMIT, these pigdogs have had the last word for FAR TOO LONG, and look how far down into the drain they've taken it. If this bad behavior were checked, earlier, or true, freedom-loving Americans had not allowed it to spiral out of control all over our country, this asshole wouldn't be able to drive around with such venom on display.

What you said are all things that, give or take a little language and volume, NEED TO BE SAID. STRAIGHT BACK IN THEIR FACES.

They do it because nobody's MAKING THEM stop. Just like a kid will pick his/her nose and eat it, write on the walls, snatch some other kid's toys, or leave wrappers all over the playground UNLESS he/she IS TOLD NOT TO. And then, if that fails, MADE TO STOP. Poor upbringing, poor training. Not just poor, negligent. Maybe just plain nonexistent.

But I applaud your getting in this guy's face. If no one ever does, the only conclusion this guy will ever draw from it is:

1) Nobody gives a crap what he has on his bumper.

2) Everybody who sees those stickers must agree with him.

3) He sure doesn't get any shit for it, must be doin' somethin' right, then, 'eh?

4) He might be encouraged to get even worse, as would others who'd also see this behavior as unchecked.

If there are no consequences for this, THAT, in and of itself, is a REWARD or REINFORCEMENT of such behavior.

BTW, I'm also glad he DIDN'T have his FUCKING guns with him (maybe he's one of those all-talk types with nothing to back it up...).

Edited on Mon Oct-04-04 10:05 AM by Carson
Stop what? Having bumper stickers? "Tell them not to"??

"Hey, Repug, you CAN'T have that stupid bumpersticker!!"

Yes, let's outlaw Repug bumper stickers. Or harrass everyone person we see who has one, or several.

Great tactic.

So much for freedom.

We're one of the more comparatively liberal states, which is why that loser's bumper sticker's really knocked me for a loop.

4. Take a chill pill. Seriously.
This does not help our side one bit -- and it's potentially dangerous.

Legally, it's also a form of assault.

This is a high-pressure election. Try to keep the anger under control. Rage never helps, as you can easily see when the Rightists do it.

Do you really want to turn into the left-wing version of a Freeper?

Keeping sane is more difficult, but it's ultimately the best choice.

To me, those bumper stickers are an assault. And Repukes have won by intimidation and insult. So, have fun if you have the stomach for this, but be careful.

I personally cannot discuss politics right now with any degree of timidity. The gloves are off. I am so sick and disgusted and in grief over my nation I don't care if my passion bugs anybody. They can kiss my teeny little Democrat ass.

So, more power to you. Yours is not everyone's style, but it does reflect the sentiments of many.

When you lose control, you lose.

Let Republicans be losers. There are far better ways to humiliate, to defeat, to overcome them.

Traffic-light temper tantrums are more suited to Freepers, bigots, and thugs.

I have to say the guy handled himself better than you did. He was probably gunning his engine because he was afraid you were going to do him harm.

Now what if it was the other way around? A Bushie yelling and flipping off a Kerry-ite?

Bad behavior and dangerous no matter who does it.

109. Huh?
How is it assault? I looked it up on in a law book when i read that and i don't see how it fits the definition.

Assault would require the potential of threat. Two cars driving side by side don't constitute that. Assault laws do not inhibit freedom of speech, unless the potential for bodily threat to the victim is extant.

29. That bumper sticker might be classified as a hate crime.
Edited on Thu Sep-30-04 06:26 PM by Pobeka
It targets an entire group, rather than an individual.

What if it said instead:

"I'd rather be killing negros"

or:

"I'd rather be killing indians".

It's not different from burning a cross, or a hanging a noose on a minority's property.

In the old days (end of the 20th century), this would not be tolerated, and someone may well start legal action against the perpetrator. "Not my car" would not be a defense, as just the act of driving the car with the sticker inflicts the damage.

I don't know if the Southern Poverty Law Center has any further info on this type of thing (targeting a political party with hate speech).

40. Free Speech
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 11:20 AM by HFishbine
You can say those things. Saying, "I'd rather be killing _____," is not a crime. If you committed a criminal act while sporting those bumber stickers or shouting such slogans, then you might be guilty of a hate crime, but simply expressing a view, no matter how repugnant, is not a crime -- and thank goodness it's not.

101. Speech is not entirely free. Google for:
"Morris Dees"
+Portland
+Ethiopian

There was a case tried against a neo-nazi leader in Portland OR in 1990.

The leader of the group only spoke, and made pamphlets. Skinhead members of the group commited a hate crime -- a murder.

The leader of the group lost a civil suit for 12.5 million, yet all he did was use "free speech".

I'm not saying the bumper sticker gets you in that same class, but in at least one case a jury did recognize that inciting hate against a particular group leads to culpability for damages, even if the means of incite using "free speech".

I understand your point that using free speech is not a criminal act. But fortunately it doesn't not let the speaker entirely off the hook either.

Consequences matter.

1. you were on the job -- hell, you probably have the phone number for your employer tattooed on the back of the truck, I hope you don't get a nasty surprise tomorrow;

2. you engaged in making the road a bit less safe by agitating another driver as well as yourself;

3. you probably strengthened his resolve by yelling at him -- he knows he got your goat;

4. he could have been a psycho nutbag with a .45 in the glove compartment, and capped your ass at the next light;

5. as you predicted, he may very well have taken out his pent-up agression on his family, and there's no need to contribute that kind of crap.

A simple  at the light would have been sufficient.

<<2. you engaged in making the road a bit less safe by agitating another driver as well as yourself;>>

<<3. you probably strengthened his resolve by yelling at him -- he knows he got your goat;>>

<<4. he could have been a psycho nutbag with a .45 in the glove compartment, and capped your ass at the next light;>>

As Tom Cruise said in RISKY BUSINESS, "Sometimes you just gotta say 'What the fuck?'."

<<5. as you predicted, he may very well have taken out his pent-up agression on his family, and there's no need to contribute that kind of crap.>>

If I hadn't caused him to do it, he'd have come up with another excuse. So fuck him.

Actually, no. I've been flipped off and screamed at several times because of my bumperstickers. I chose to retain my dignity and not respond in like manner.

Just because I don't yell obsenities or give rude gestures back doesn't mean I'm a coward or lack conviction. It simply means I won't lower myself to their level.

It's a bumpersticker. Big deal. Don't act like an idiot.

38. Organism is absolutely right on what to do here
0rganism Posted:
Consequences matter.

1. you were on the job

Scenario #1
He is dialing 911 with his right hand and reports a road rage incident. Gives the tag # of the couple that watched everything from behind you as witnesses. He reports to 911 dispatcher that he is in fear of his life that you had something that appeared to be a weapon<¿maybe it was your cell phone that he say looks like a small handgun?>. The police intervene and you're arrested for disorderly conduct and terroristic threats. Your boss is called to come pick up the delivery vehicle and is given a report of why/what happened. You are fired for workplace violence since you were on the clock and had to be arrested.

Scenario #2
He baits you with some finger action and taunts of his own that cannot be seen by the witnesses due to the placement of bumper stickers. Since you're already mad, you jump out of your vehicle and grab the open window to yell at him. He sprays you with pepper spray and stomps the accelerator. You fall and are run over by the rear tires as his vehicle moves. EMS is called but pronounces you dead due to an injury incompatible with life(brains on pavement). Since he used non-lethal force and was trying to leave from an attacker, the DA cannot press charges.

Who is the loser in both of those cases? Like my mom always said, "Always, always hold the moral high ground."

Picking fights such as these in such charged elections as this one, is not a good idea. I suggest some anger management classes.

His bumper stickers were an example of his First Amendment rights. You're screaming at him like that were, I suppose, the same, save for a possible comparison to yelling "fire" in a crowded theater.

I feel embarassed for you that you're not embarrassed. I don't think you're an asshole so figure that you just lost your cool. But, tough guy, I wouldn't be proud of it! Further, you're going to get your anus shot some day if you keep doing this shit.

If you're going to drive around with that kind of stuff on your vehicle--left-wing or wight-wing--you can't expect everybody to judt ignore it. 37. Well, there's the right way to fight back and the wrong way to
fight back.

If it was really, really important to you to just vent your spleen no matter what the consequences, and you feel all better and like a real he-man or something as a result, then  I guess I can see how you thought it was the right thing to do in the moment.

But it accomplishes absolutely NOTHING more. In fact, it actually adds to the hatred, conflict and even the violence. That makes it actually counterproductive in my book. It's also unlikely you won any hearts and minds, so chalk another one in the counterproductive column.

I am not trying to make you feel bad and don't really fault you for your passion in the moment. I do hope, however, that you'll take the opportunity to think about what some other DUers and myself are saying. Just think about it, that's all.

Step back for a second and imagine somebody behind both of your cars watching your interaction. Who looks like the out-of-control driver? The one shouting obscenities out of his car or the one keeping his eyes on the road?

There are better ways to "goad" the repugs. Do you have any bumperstickers on your car? Get in front of him to show him your side of things. Just smile as you pass by him. You'll look much more in control of things.

Make it a friendly bumpersticker war. :)

26. Not only that, but I have always had to worry about bumper stickers
being in the south, and he put them on his car, so he can reap what he sowed. He make take them off after what you said to him today, especially since he was too scared to respond.

God was with you today, and good for you, at least for letting him know not everyone agrees with him. Ironically, I was behind a family today with Bush/Cheney stickers, a sticker saying "Relax, God is in control" and then a sticker RIGHT BESIDE IT saying Kerry would take their guns away or something (in NC, but with SC tags). I had to laugh out loud at that, because if I hadn't been in the van with the great big work phone # on the side and if I hadn't been outnumbered four to one, what I would have liked to ask this guy is 'if God is in control, why are all the gun bumper stickers? Why do you need guns if God is protecting your super special xtian ass?'.

Which of course I did not say, but I got a good chuckle out of his display.

Has anyone here ever seen or displayed a sticker that says "I'd rather be killing republicans"???? That is beyond political, that is psychopathic hate.

Okay Nightrain, you've earned your "give 'em hell" badge. I think most of us really appreciate it, and we exempt you from taking any more chances like this again if you don't want to. Bravo!

I also would have called the police and reported the "I'd rather be killing Democrats" sticker. Sounds like a threat to me! Then again, under the repuke rules it could just be Free Speech. :eyes:

Night Train, :yourock: The reason the repukes ARE where they ARE is because we Democrats haven't confronted them and called them on all their bullshit ENOUGH. It's about time we start...unless we want to live under a repuke regime forever. We have to stop letting them get away with saying whatever hateful shit they wish to say about Democrats.

78. Everybody PLEASE consider this MOST perceptive statement:
"The reason the repukes ARE where they ARE is because we Democrats haven't confronted them and called them on all their bullshit ENOUGH. It's about time we start...unless we want to live under a repuke regime forever. We have to stop letting them get away with saying whatever hateful shit they wish to say about Democrats."

I know what you mean, in_cog_ni_to.

Granted, I wouldn't have used quite the language or volume, but I SURE DO THINK THOSE THINGS.

You beat down a bully by CONFRONTING him or her.

Repeat:

You beat down a bully by CONFRONTING him or her.

You encourage bad behavior by NOT CHECKING IT when it occurs.

Repeat:

You encourage bad behavior by NOT CHECKING IT when it occurs.

These people rant the way they do because, up til now, we've been cowed and told we have to play nice, or that we always have to take the high road, and there's just simply been no reason for them to stop. Certainly there's been NOBODY out there "encouraging" them to stop. They do it - because they CAN. Because up til now, nobody's ever given them shit for it. Because up til now, they've NEVER had to face any consequences for it. It's bad behavior completely unchecked. And thus, in effect, IT'S BEING REWARDED AND REINFORCED.

Maybe if that's the reaction this guy got every time he hit the road, he might start thinking twice about parading that hatred around on his back bumper.

I get disgusted at the humblest, most unobtrusive little W sticker, so it's not like I don't understand your feelings. I agree the guy's a piece of shit, but you went after him like a maniac. It isn't worth the risk, and in the end, we still have this thing called freedom of expression.

And there's this other thing called karma that I like to think will eventually reward a person who feels comfortable saying he'd rather be killing Democrats.

If only everyone here did the same that would really show those freepers who the better side was. You should be so damn proud of yourself. Such a big man. Honestly, I think the freeper came out of this looking like less of a douchebag. If nothing else he showed admirable restraint. And I seriously doubt if you scared him, even for a second. If some asshole got in my face and started screaming curses, I think I (and most people) would probably try and beat his ass. That's what I'd expect someone with those bumperstickers to do. Of course I guess I'd also expect someone with those bumperstickers to be the dickwad doing the screaming . . .

Yeah, the bumperstickers are terrible, but still don't think you're a badass cause some guy showed himself the better man and walked away.

I have found that fucking with people can lead to unintended consequences.

That guy could have been an ex-marine and dragged you out of your vehicle and beat you unconscious.

He could have put a slug in your brain. And then gone to get lunch.

You have the ability to do that stuff to people but I hope you are willing to deal with the possible consequences.

When I see this shit or get into shit with people it is almost always better to ignore it. He put out the bait and you took it hook line and sinker. IMHO.

It was probably made at one of those do it yourself sites as I cannot think anybody in their right mind would consider selling such things.

The best possible scenario happened from your course of action. The guy carried on and you did not get into a physical and possibly a lethal situation.

for flipping out. The stickers really are repulsive. Anyone saying they want to kill other people, that too fellow Americans is beyond the pale. I've felt a bit of rage and anger inside when I see cars with these kind of bumper stickers.

However, I think it's better to think to yourself that that person is a freak, and try to get the hell away from them. Honestly these people are nuts. What's to say that these people WON'T kill you? Consequences mean nothing to them. Other witnesses could have said it was in self defense.

Roads aren't the best place to settle political differences. The most I would urge anyone to do is give a hand gesture, but even that can have bad consequences. The best thing to do is ignore these motherfuckers, and try to pass them as soon as possible. Show off your own bumperstickers!

104. I enjoy screaming at the abortion activists who show up at democratic
rallies. My phrase of choice is "Yeah, I think someone's mother could have benefitted from an abortion." These people who hold these signs, I've noticed, are middle aged or older women, quite unattractive and look as though they've never even had children. It's freakishly interesting.

105. That was a truly obnoxious comment.
"These people who hold these signs, I've noticed, are middle aged or older women, quite unattractive and look as though they've never even had children."

How does one "look as though they've never had children"? How does that work? And what is your standard for attractiveness, in order to be able to have children?

Not a very enlightened comment.

107. Do you also shout "Four more Years" at Bush rallies?
Your anti-women's choice stance and your bigoted view of activists go nicely with the "Four More Years" chant.

110. I'd think a thumbs down sign would suffice
Too many of these idiots around here would be armed. And the B/C sticker drivers tend to drive like maniacs anyway. I'd rather just stay out of their way. Let Darwin weed em out.

111. Quite frankly....
...I'd normally be appalled at the behavior you describe because I know that we don't like getting that kind of reaction from rightwingers because of our bumperstickers, BUT I couldn't stop laughing as I read your post. I guess one of us had to do it at least once and I'm glad it was you NightTrain.

"PRESIDENT KERRY, YOU ASSHOLE!" I fucking love it.

115. I Saw
A car that had that bumper sticker, I'd Rather Be Killing Democrats and "You are Either a Liberal or You are An American". This really got me angry, not because they supported bush, but because One was threatening and the other a vicious lie. I sat down wrote a long list of How liberals helped this country. First point, if it were not for Liberals , we would be flying the Union Jack and singing "God Save the Queen" and listed many great Liberal accomplishments, and just placed the note under the windshield. I never insulted the person or questioned their choices, just pointed out that Liberals and Democrats was just as Patriotic or perhaps more than any closed minded conservative.
